‘Game of Thrones’ and Four Other ‘Total War’ Games They Need to Make

Total War: Warhammer III is a big hit, so here are some other games they need to make.

Total War: Warhammer III is a pretty dang cool game. It’s done an amazing job of realizing the massive breadth and scope of the tabletop game and setting. Warhammer also marked the first, and only real, time Total War made a non-historical game. Now that they’ve proven it can work, why not keep the hype going? Here are a few more Total War games and settings we’d love to see.

Total War: Game of Thrones

Old Valyria

Game of Thrones is 100% a perfect setting for a Total War game. It’s a massive and detailed fantasy setting with a filled-out map and tons of factions and cultures. It’s such an obvious setting that fans have been doing it for years. There are numerous mods for Total War games and other games, like the above Crusader Kings mod. None however are office and there isn’t a really good complete mod for a Total War game. It is however one that should totally (warily) get made. There are even multiple places in the timeline you could set it.

The Remake of That One TW Game You Really Like

“But wait!” You might be saying. “What I really want is for them to take the time to remake my favorite outdated Total War game!”  And you know what? You are right. They should totally do that. Is it Medieval? Shogun? Empire (my true love) or any of the others? Then yeah, they should remake it. I’d love that also. However, I can’t just fill this whole list with already-made games I want to remake (my editor said so) so all the old ones get crammed into this one spot!

Total War: Gods & Men

Hey, what if they made a good version of Tory: A Total War Saga? No, seriously. The wasted potential of this game was crazy and it ended up being lackluster and not well-received. How about making a game set in mythic Greece around the time of the Trojan War but leaning into mythology? Add in magic and monsters and gods and stuff. Be more like Total War: Warhammer. Also, they need to use the Three Kingdoms retinue system (why they didn’t in Troy is a major mystery). This system is 100% perfect for representing mythic heroes and the bands of warriors following them into battle.

How About The Wheel of Time?

Like Game of Thrones, The Wheel of Time is another great fantasy setting. It’s also got a great filled-in map with a ton of nations, factions, and cultures. It would super easy to adapt this to a Total War game. Moreover, you could bring in a lot of the TW: Warhammer ideas of corruption and map influence. The spreading of the Blight works great for this. You’ve got easy invasion mechanics with a couple of groups from outside the map attack. You’ve also got a great end game with the world having to pick sides in the Final Battle.

19th Century Total War

Fall of the Samurai proved that you could make a mid-19th century Total War with early modern guns, cannons, and ships. However, it was focused on a small scale. Empire and Napoleon ended at the start of the century (and are really focused on early periods). So how about a Total War focused on say 1840-1800? But on a grand scale like Empire. There is a lot you could do here.
