Ghostwire: Tokyo will haunt its way onto the Xbox in time for brand new content.

Tango Gameworks is a studio founded in 2010 by Resident Evil and Dino Crisis director Shinji Mikami. The studio was acquired by Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax and they developed The Evil Within series in 2014. The series was immediately popular with gamers thanks to a draught of horror games during this period. The studio announced they were working on a brand-new action-adventure horror IP called Ghostwire: Tokyo at E3 2019. The game follows a young man named Akito who gets special powers after his hand is possessed by a spirit. The two of them must work together to stop the world from being overrun by Yokai and stop a ritual to save Akito’s sister and the world.

The game was set as a one-year timed exclusive for PlayStation consoles before the ZeniMax sale to Microsoft. Phil Spencer confirmed that they would not interfere with any deals made before the sale. This is why Ghostwire: Tokyo and The Outer Worlds were still released for PlayStation. Those deals were made way ahead of time–unlike Starfield. Xbox fans have been patiently waiting since then and the wait is almost over for them. Current players will also get a nice treat.

Xbox Release Date and Spider Yokais!

Bethesda announced that the Xbox consoles would be getting Ghostwire: Tokyo as well brand new content on all platforms on April 12th. The new content is adding a ton to the game. An all-new mode, new areas, Spider Yokai, and so much more! They released a small trailer showing off the horrifying Spider Yokai players will face with the update. The rest of the trailer is mostly just showing off the game to announce the content and the release date. The new features are better explained in the description of the video.

“Something different is looming in Tokyo. New otherworldly threats, strange occurrences and ghostly sightings have been spotted in the city – are you ready to dive into the unknown and save the day?

Ghostwire: Tokyo’s Spider’s Thread Update adds tons of new content to the game:

A challenging new roguelite mode, The Spider’s Thread, where players must fight floor-by-floor to reach the end, while uncovering a mysterious new story

Haunting new areas to explore in the main game—including the eerie Middle School—and new missions to unravel

New and expanded main story cutscenes

Deeper combat: avoid enemy attacks with the new Quick Dodge and Perfect Block Counter-Attack; strike from above with new aerial abilities; master powerful new Charge Rush Ethereal Weaving techniques; and utilize new talismans to aid you in battle

New enemy Visitors to test your skills

Expanded Photo Mode: add stamps to your screenshots, and use Meika to unlock figures at capsule machines to add their models to use in Photo Mode”

This is pretty exciting since Photo Modes are all the rage. It’s fun to make incredibly cool shots and is a great way to let gamers show off the game to others. The new story content areas, new gameplay mechanics, and game modes will also make it feel like a whole different game for people who have already played. It’s also being a fun way to convince new players to wait for the Xbox version. Sifu also did this with its Xbox release as well coming at the end of March.

I’m a huge fan of a good ol’ fashioned story of good vs evil supernatural forces–this game was right up my alley when it was announced. The game length tends to be around 20+ hours if you do all the original content in the game, so this new content is a great treat for anyone wanting more. If you are looking into getting into the game, now would be a great time to prepare for the new content in April.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is currently out for PS5 and PC with an Xbox Series X/S release on April 12th.
