Here’s Why We’re Stoked for the Scott Pilgrim Anime

Scott Pilgrim is coming back! This time in anime form, and we’re immediately optimistic. Here’s why we’re excited about a Scott Pilgrim anime.

Yesterday Netflix announced the upcoming Scott Pilgrim anime. And we’re excited. Sure, Netflix has burned us in the past. Sure, many of us are waiting for the last two or three shows we care about to end or be canceled so we can cut ties with the streaming giant for good. But Scott Pilgrim is one thing I might actually hang around for.

The Cast

via Netflix

The cast is the same as the 2010 live-action film. Remember that? You do. Michael Cera toed the line between likable and garbage man, Aubrey Plaza impressively self-bleeped her expletives, and sometimes we think back to it and say, ‘Chris Evans and Brie Larson were both in that?! Wow.’ It was a fun movie and a pretty solid adaptation of the comics, but perhaps the best thing about the movie was the spot-on casting. And they’ll be back for the anime. This is great news in my book. This entire cast was perfect the first time around, and their biggest issue portraying these characters now is that they’re all a bit too old… But that doesn’t matter in voice acting!

Time for Pacing

Like we said, we enjoyed the 2010 movie. It was a lot of fun. But the Scott Pilgrim comics are collected into six volumes. Naturally, things had to be sped through, glossed over, or just plain cut out of the movie to fit 112-minute runtime. Even if the anime series only lasts one season, that’s already so much more time to get in more background, details, and good old goofs at Scott’s expense.

Bryan Lee O’Malley is On Board

Bryan Lee O’Malley is the creator of Scott Pilgrim and he’s involved in the anime. O’Malley will specifically be co-writing, executive producing, and show-running the anime alongside BenDavid Grabinski. It always gives me a little glimmer of hope that a project will be good when the creator has given it their blessing or is heavily involved. So seeing this right from the get-go lets us know that this adaptation definitely has some real potential.

Fight Scenes

Some things don’t translate quite as well to live-action, and cartoonish over-the-top fight scenes are one of them. It’s honestly one of the biggest reasons I’m apprehensive about (also Netflix’s) live-action One Piece. How do you do that with real people without looking… bad? Granted, the movie did a decent job. Where things did look goofy they played into it for some bonus campy points. But animated? They can literally do whatever they want. Fight scenes in the anime Scott Pilgrim have the potential to be absolutely buck-wild and I can’t wait to see that.

Are you looking forward to the Scott Pilgrim anime? Who is your favorite evil ex? Which fight do you think will be the most fun in animation? Let us know in the comments!
