If you’re thinking about getting into Frosthaven, you should first warm up with Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion.

When Gloomhaven came out, it was unlike any game before it. It drew a huge following and was nearly impossible to find for ages. Once the dust settled, some people thought it might have too high a learning curve. Thus, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion was born!

If you’ve been thinking about getting into Frosthaven but were turned off by the 35 lbs of game, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is a great way to dip your toes into the water.

A More Approachable Gloomhaven

Jaws of the Lion strips down a lot of the mechanics of Gloomhaven without stripping out any gameplay. It’s a much smaller box and a lot easier to get started. Still, all the characters are fully compatible with the full Gloomhaven experience.

There is still the same character progression, decision-based narrative, and legacy elements you’ll find in Gloomhaven. It’s a fully stand-alone expansion and set in the same universe. So you can even integrate the characters and items into your Gloomhaven or Frosthaven games if you want to.

Rather than a board for the combat map, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion uses a spiral book that lays flat. All the rules specific to the scenario are printed right on the page, making referencing them a lot easier. Don’t worry; there is a separate book for rules and reference. This means you won’t have to try to peek at your map book to reference some rules.

Finally, if you’re looking for that Gloomhaven experience that’s just got a more streamlined foundation, I highly recommend Tales From the Red Dragon Inn.
