By the looks of the new Robocop: Rogue City trailer, I’m guessing most of them are coming in dead.

Video games based on existing properties have always been a mixed bag. Especially ones based on beloved 80s franchises. RoboCop is one of my all-time favorite franchises and is not immune from this gaming curse. Some of the games aren’t bad, like RoboCop vs Terminator for SNES and Genesis. Then again, some were pretty much unplayable, like RoboCop (2003). Answers will vary on what were the best and worst games throughout the franchise. We all agree though that RoboCop 3 for the NES has a really cool soundtrack.

Still, we’ve been waiting for that one RoboCop game that has all the love put into it that franchises like Spider-Man and Batman have enjoyed. The last time Murphy was in a game was the recent Mortal Kombat 11; his character was added as a DLC. Peter Weller came back to reprise his role, fighting the likes of Shang Tsung, Scorpion, and even Rambo as Old Detroit’s protector.

RoboCop: Rogue City

When RoboCop: Rogue City was first announced in July 2021, I was cautiously optimistic. 80s movie games are back on the rise with games like Predator: Hunting Grounds and Aliens:Fireteam Elite. These games have been mostly multiplayer, so I was worried it would be one of those. Luckily for everyone, the game is actually being developed by Teyon, the studio that made the underrated Terminator Resistance game back in 2019.

The idea of a new RoboCop game was intriguing and I became even more excited when they released the first gameplay reveal trailer. Peter Weller is back as Alex Murphy! Since then, the game has been kind of dormant on news. It was supposed to release in June 2023. RoboCop fans finally got some more news on the game’s release.

“I Have to Go. Somewhere There is a Crime Happening.”

Nacon, the publisher for the game, recently held a live stream showing off its upcoming games for the year. During this presentation, we finally got more info on Rogue City. The game has been delayed to a new release window of September 2023. No word on the reason for the delay, but it’s a safe bet it just needs more development time.

The gameplay trailer itself shows off more of what the game could be like without the cinematic cuts. Peter Weller is giving that classic walking sound all around Old Detroit. Eventually, the player comes across an arcade selling drugs in the back. They’re told to “go away” in a less nice way. RoboCop then has to find evidence of a crime before he feels comfortable going all “Arrest Mode” on everyone.

The gunplay for the game is pretty straightforward for most of the trailer. It shows that his targeting computer probably helps with quick aiming at enemies. It also shows off his ability to pick up bad guys to either use as a shield or just throw them. This would be useful for rooms full of guys; players could take out more than 1 person at a time.

He also sports a melee attack, so feel free to get in close. The trailer also confirmed that the Auto 9 is not the only weapon he’ll use during play. There’s a moment when everything slows down and he uses an SMG to mow down enemies. How that works has yet to be explained.

But Murphy isn’t invincible–the trailer shows that he repairs himself. It’s a fun explanation for the regenerating health that’s standard in a lot of shooter games. The sequence ends with his classic gun spin, which just made me giddy.

“There’s a New Guy in Town. His Name is RoboCop.”

Not much is known about the story of the game so far. The gameplay reveal trailer hints at things aren’t right with RoboCop and Old Detroit is still very crime-ridden. The game’s description hints that the player will have the option to make different choices in how they police Detroit which possibly affects the story.

“Become the iconic part man, part machine, all cop hero as you attempt to bring justice to the dangerous, crime-ridden streets of Old Detroit. Armed with your trusty Auto-9, factory-built strength, years of experience on the force and a variety of tools at your disposal, you will fight forces seeking to destroy the city you call home in an all new first-person, explosive hunt for the truth. You have the power to decide how to fulfil prime directives in your own way, but as the story unfolds proceed with caution because corruption and greed know no limits.
Prepare yourself to…
PROTECT THE INNOCENT AND UPHOLD THE LAW”
