RPG Superstar, the extremely popular Pathfinder design contest is back, brought to you by Roll for Combat. Make a monster and enter today!

Let’s take a quick trip back to those halcyon pre-pandemic days. To the years between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis to before the rise of 5th Edition. This was the time of Pathfinder at its peak. The only game powerful enough to unseat D&D from atop its throne (by being more D&D than D&D was, at the time).

It was a time of everyone opening up the hood of a newly refined system and tinkering to see what they could come up with. Which brought about a contest, RPG Superstar. This was a Pathfinder design contest that expanded the community and gave designers a foot in the door, so to speak. Back in 2020, Roll for Combat picked up the contest and revamped it for Pathfinder 2E. And now it’s back, with a brand new theme for 2023. Monsters and mayhem await!

RPG Superstar 2023 – Elemental Storm

Roll for Combat has outlined this year’s contest. And it’s all about monstrous mayhem. Entrants will be asked to design a monster around a theme, in this case, one of 20 different elements (sure there’s wind, fire, all that kind of thing, but add force and mind to the list):

RPG Superstar is back and better than ever, and this year’s theme will be Elemental Storm!

What does that mean exactly? It means we are looking for your monsters (written for Pathfinder 2nd Edition) that have a connection to one of the 20 elements listed and explained in the contest overview section.

That doesn’t mean they should necessarily be elementals; we’re looking for monsters that match the theme of one to three of the elements, regardless of creature type. If you want to stand out, think of clever ways to include the elemental connection. And remember, a true Superstar can express even the most esoteric elements with elegant mechanics.

Submissions will be judged via two rounds of voting. The first will be a public round, anyone can vote. From that selection, the top contenders will be judged by Roll for Combat, and from there, winners will be chosen.

The grand prize winner will receive $250 in prize money, as well as their creation featured on the cover of the upcoming Roll for Combat Battlezoo Bestiary: Elemental Storm, along with a minimum four-page spread. With other prizes featuring less money and a smaller spread in the final book, but a total of 139 winners will be featured. So if that sounds like something you’re interested in vying for, be sure and check out the official rules.

Submissions are open from now until May 28th, so get your monsters in—and best of luck!
