Goatboy’s Grimdark Armylist: 10th Edition-Proof Grey Knights

4 Minute Read
Apr 13 2023

Goatboy here to talk about how to start a brand new 40K army right now that will be 10th Edition Proof. Let’s talk Grey Knights!

This time we’ll look at Grey Knights as they have both a Boarding Patrol and Combat Patrol boxed set.  The Combat Patrol seems to be the “better” box just due to the fact it doesn’t come with a Special Character.  The Boarding Patrol is still nice as Crowe is a good purchase.  Our goal again is to get something decent at 500 or less and I think we can do that pretty easily with Grey Knights right now.

Grey Knight Boarding Patrol

Let’s Get Grey Knight Shopping

Let’s start with the purchase combo of the Boarding Patrol and Combat Patrol.  That would run you $110.00 plus $160.00 minus the normal 15% off you would normally fine.  This hits you at $230.00 without tax and gets you the following – sans upgrades.

Grey Knight Combat Patrol + Boarding Patrol Contents

Dreadknight Grandmaster with all the toys – 215pts
Librarian in Terminator Armor – 95pts
Castellan Crowe – 85pts
Terminator Squad X 5 – 175pts
Terminator Squad X 5 – 175pts
Strike Squad X 5 – 100pts
Inceptor Squad X 10 – 240pts

Total Points = 1085pts

Grey Knight Combat Patrol

Growing the Grey Knights

The question from here is where do you go?  The Boarding Patrol does give you a decent amount of stuff but having 2 Crowes is a lot harder to utilize.  The Boarding Patrol gives you another Dreadknight, Termiantors, 5 more Strikes, and a Librarian which could be used again.  The Terminators could be used for characters too which isn’t a bad thing.  Plus the Librarian can be converted into one of the Elite Characters too as needed.  This adds another 136 dollars to the total but it gets us the following if we wanted too.

Grey Knight 2x Combat Patrol + Boarding Patrol Contents

Dreadknight Grandmaster with all the toys – 215pts
Librarian in Terminator Armor – 95pts
Castellan Crowe – 85pts
Brother Captain – 100pts
Brotherhood Apothecary – 90pts
Brotherhood Ancient – 90pts
Paladin Squad X 3 – 135pts
Terminator Squad X 5 – 175pts
Terminator Squad X 5 – 175pts
Strike Squad X 5 – 100pts
Inceptor Squad X 10 – 240pts
Inceptor Squad X 5 – 120pts
Dreadknight with all the toys – 185pts

Total Points = 1805pts and all models used.

Total model cost is $366.00 plus tax and whatever else you might spend.  To get this pile over the 2000 point limit you would have to look at buying one more box of something.  We could buy a single Dreadknight to make the points close to 2000 but not leave us a ton of room for any upgrades etc.  We could look at adding 2 Rhinos as they can easily hold the Inceptor Squad in one, the small Inceptor squad, and the Strike Squad to allow for a nice bit of protection from all the no LOS stuff we are seeing.  I am leaning towards that as it just feels better and still gives a lot of room for extra toys.  Let’s add 2 Rhinos at $94.00 total to bring us to right under 500 dollars with a 2000 point list.

Putting It All Together for 10th

Total Box set costs is $460.00 plus taxes for your area.  Is this going to be good in 9th right now?  Probably not but with 10th coming around the corner and everything getting updated it should be a fun time to pick up a new army that has a ton of tools to get working. This combo is both very easy to collect, and has a set of generically useful units that should keep you safe and sound on the 10th Edition tabletop – with minimal waste.

Happy Gaming!
