Warhammer 40K is throwing out almost all of it’s rules for building armylists. Are you ready for the new slim and trim 10th Edition?

Goatboy here and with this week we get a bit more 10th Edition info about how to build your armies – or as I like to read it – Like Arks of Omen with less rules.  Or Arks of Omen with less things to trip over.  Which of course breaks all the old aspects of the game finally but hey – without change how will we make it better right?

10th Edition Armylist Basics

The overall build is you pick one hero – whether an Epic Hero (named) or regular – pick whatever else you want with a limit of 3 of or 6 of for Battleline (aka Troops) and you have your army.  Gone are the days of minimum choices beyond the 1 hero and the question comes to mind is that ok?  Are we fine with breaking the traditions of the past and how we think of armies?

Personally – I think we are.  Arks of Omen has shown to be really interesting if you remove some of the “rotten” pieces when building armies.  Just taking it as a whole without codex’s, supplements, or WD updates it works pretty well.  You can basically build what you want as long as you take 3 choices of something.  As this isn’t completely breaking the system it makes sense we can easily move to this new – looser method for creating your army of badasses to take over the Grimdark Universe.

Such a short, sweet life… We hardly knew you.

The King is Dead, Long Live the King

But in all this discussion I do think armies will basically look the same.  There is enough chatter about making Battlelines units viable and I am sure they will have a bunch of different rules to help them out.  I don’t know what they will look like, but the talk is the Datasheets will be more than just a basic unit with things added to those special index pages.  I am sure there will be other rules too that will try to amp up Batteline as the new “core” like keyword in the future.  Or it will just be a method on how they can build a Combat Patrol etc.

Still – without the points will not know how much this all gets balanced within the confines of the game and the knots we tie ourselves into as we craft armylists in a world of numbers, stats, and nonsense.  I get the feeling the points will end up being close to the same.  It just makes sense as we have had so many years of balanced points and updates that it would continue to be the same.  But again – we’ll have to see.

Welcome to the Future Normal

Are you excited about 10th edition?  Does the simplified idea of easier to understand rules work for everyone?  I am excited because it just sounds like an easier time to get things working for new players, older players, and just judging in general.  I want the game to have answers that we don’t have to search for and having rules on cards and available will make those easier.

Plus – I hope the continued idea that army units are built based on the box with points for upgrades or changes in their equipment included in their total sounds like a blessing to me.  From an army building standpoint and hopefully an army app building side of things it will make life a heck of a lot easier.  Anything to make the time from army building to table top battles faster and easier will just be nicer to play with.

Come on 10th Edition – get here already!
