Lord of the Rings Roleplaying will let D&D players everywhere prove they could have done it faster by speedrunning the Ring to Mordor on the back of a Giant Eagle.

Lord of the Rings and Dungeons & Dragons go hand in hand. Like chocolate and, slightly different, derivative chocolate with d20s for some reason. Look, it’s not the cleanest metaphor in the world, but mixing D&D and LotR seems like something everyone tries at least once in their life. And it’s because everything in Middle-earth is like, right there in D&D.

To the point where the Tolkien estate once sued TSR, D&D’s creators, for copyright infringement. It’s why halflings are halflings and not hobbits. And now that 5th Edition is the most popular RPG out there, everyone’s getting in on that 5E action. Today, for instance, Free League announced that The Lords of the Rings Roleplaying, aka LotR for 5E D&D but officially licensed and everything, was coming in May.

It’s a move that brings Middle Earth to D&D. There’s a kind of irony in the fantasy world that helped inspire D&D now getting adapted to its rules. But Free League has promised to keep Middle Earth at the heart of this adaptation.

Lord of the Rings Roleplaying – 5E D&D and Middle-Earth, Together Again

The new edition of The One Ring™ RPG, set in the world of The Lord of the Rings™ by J.R.R. Tolkien and designed by Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi, became the most successful tabletop roleplaying core game ever on Kickstarter when it ended March 4, 2021. Now the time has come to open Middle-earth for even more roleplayers with a brand new 5E adaptation.

The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying contains everything you need to create exciting 5E adventures set in the world’s most popular fantasy setting: six original heroic cultures from the land of Eriador, six new classes, a host of terrifying adversaries, and comprehensive rules for journeys, councils, wondrous artefacts, and the subtle magic of Middle-earth.

The new book is everything you need to play in the world of Middle-earth with all its themes and intrigue. You might recognize the difference between the typical D&D party and characters in Middle-earth. Murderhobos they, typically, ain’t. This is why there will be six new classes, cultures, and more to look forward to.

But of special interest will be the new rules to make your adventures feel more like tales out of Lord of the Rings. One of the biggest things in The One Ring is the rules for heroic journeys and heroic councils.

It’ll be interesting to see how Free League manages the lower, subtler magic of Middle-earth with the spell levels and very mechanical magic of D&D 5E. But In The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying, we’ll surely see how it all shakes out.

Releasing alongside the book is a pre-generated adventure. Titled, Shire Adventure, the adventure will take you through familiar grounds by way of introduction.

Happy adventuring!
