The academy has been a backdrop for bigger stories for decades. Now it’s the star – a Starfleet Academy series is on the way. Picard and Discovery are wrapping up – it’s an opportune time to explore another part of Starfleet that has been seen mostly in passing over the years. CBS has announced a new series that will explore what life at the Academy is like. Franchise regular Alex Kurtzman and newcomer Noga Landau (The Magicians) will lead the project.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow a group of young cadets pursuing a shared dream of hope and exploring the stars at one of the galaxy’s most legendary schools. As they learn from the best instructors, they’ll have to navigate new friendships, rivalries, and an enemy that threatens the Academy and the Federation itself.

The showrunners would like to welcome you to the Academy…

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves.

“The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!”

The press release didn’t comment on when on the timeline the Starfleet Academy series will be set. The announcement mentions that the academy has been closed for a century, which puts it after The Burn. Based on that tiny bit of info, the new series being a Discovery spin-off is very likely. The cast hasn’t been announced, but we do know that the show will start filming next year.
