We’ve finally got a new teaser for The Wheel of Time Season Two and with it comes a big mystery.

The Wheel of Time is chugging along on Amazon, with its third season starting production. This last week at JordanCon 2023 we finally got some more news on the show. The last few months have seen relatively little updates or news, even as viewers wait for a release date for season 2. While we didn’t get that, we did get a nearly 30-minute-long Q&A video with the showrunners. Along with the introduction of a trio of Aiel Maidens of the Spear,  Maja Simonsen as Chiad, Ragga Ragnars as Bain, and Ayoola Smart as Aviendha, it also answered a lot of fan questions. Hidden among the questions was one big mystery fans have been talking about since.

Minor book spoilers ahead!

The Wheel of Time Mystery

What’s the big mystery everyone is trying to figure out? What set were these portions of the video filmed on? What is the location we are seeing here? It appears to be a decently-sized set. It seems at least some of the people were on set for this. Rafe Judkins, the showrunner, stated that the set was going to feature in both seasons 2 and 3. And that’s about all we know.

The Stone of Tear

The Stone of Tear is a fairly important location in both books three and four of The Wheel of Time. It’s a massive fortress and one of the oldest buildings in the world. It’s also the setting for the ending of book three and the beginning part of book four. Season 2 seems to cover books three and four while Season 4 will cover book four and maybe more! So this would fit. Aiel is present in the Stone in both books, so having them on set makes sense. The central part of the Stone, known as the Heart of the Stone, is described as having massive red stone columns. And this is where things begin to fall apart a bit.

The background we can see certainly has stone, but it doesn’t really have a lot of massive columns. The set just doesn’t quite look right for this. In addition, it seems likely that the Stone scenes may get cut from the show due to combining books. If that’s the case then this certainly isn’t the Stone. All in all, it doesn’t seem highly like this is the answer to the mystery.

Rhuidean

Another contender for our mystery location is the ruined city of Rhuidean. This desert city is effectively the capital/center of Aiel and a place of great power. It first shows up in book four and plays a major role in a few books. Being a major Aiel location it would totally make sense for the Maidens to be there. In addition, the set does kind of look like a ruined desert city. However, Rhuidean was built to mimic a city from before the Breaking of the World and likely had a much more “modern” look than we see here. In addition, it doesn’t show up until book four. Based on that it’s unlikely that we would see it in Season 2, which won’t cover that book.

Could Out Mystery Be Answered in the White Tower?

Another possible location for this set is the lower levels of The White Tower. These lower sections are where Novices go to take their test to become Accepted, one step below Aes Sedai. They do this using a powerful artifact, a ter’angreal, made of three arches. Now you can see in the pictures of the set that items that appear to be columns in the background are almost certainly arches. We can see two of them and it’s not far-fetched to think there could be a third.

This room and the arches play a major role in both books three and four as the main characters are tested there. Based on that it could very well fit in. Even the architecture seems to fit the White Tower OK. On the other hand, the Aiel are never in that room so they aren’t a good fit. In addition, the arches are described in the book as being silvery and rather thin. That doesn’t match these arches at all.

Overall the set isn’t a dead ringer for any of these locations, and we will likely need more information to solve this Wheel of Time mystery.
