D&D and LotR Crash Together In Free League’s ‘Lord of the Rings 5E’

2 Minute Read
May 10 2023

Howling like nine Ringwraiths out of Mordor, the Lord of the Rings 5E roleplaying supplement is here at last, in hardcover and PDF. In the world of Roleplaying Games, there is only one lord of the rings, and it does not share power. D&D’s 5th Edition ruleset casts a long shadow, long enough to stretch all the way to the reaches of Mordor if you can believe it. And believe it, you should, because the 5E Lord of the Rings supplement is out as of today.

Available in hardcover and PDF, Lord of the Rings Roleplaying is Lord of the Rings but for 5th Edition. You can see it in action with none other than everyone’s favorite Frodo, Elijah Wood, if you’re curious about how it works:

Lord of the Rings Comes To 5E With LotR Roleplaying

Curious about what you can find in the book? Let’s take a look, friends.

The new edition of The One Ring™ RPG, set in the world of The Lord of the Rings™ by J.R.R. Tolkien and designed by Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi, became the most successful tabletop roleplaying core game ever on Kickstarter when it ended March 4, 2021. Now the time has come to open Middle-earth for even more roleplayers with a brand new 5E adaptation.

The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying contains everything you need to create exciting 5E adventures set in the world’s most popular fantasy setting: six original heroic cultures from the land of Eriador, six new classes, a host of terrifying adversaries, and comprehensive rules for journeys, councils, wondrous artefacts, and the subtle magic of Middle-earth.

We’ve talked about Lord of the Rings Roleplaying a few times before here at BoLS.

You probably know that Free League is determined to explore how a Middle-earth Fellowship differs from the typical D&D adventuring party. There’s a decided lack of going on quests to dungeons to kill monsters and get gold. But that’s why a big part of the book revolves around the introduction of six new classes, which fundamentally change the dynamics of a party. Alongside that, there are six new cultures, and revamped rules for going on heroic journeys or holding a heroic council. You know, all the stuff you need to feel like you’re actually in a Lord of the Rings story instead of just a regular D&D.

And you can check it out for yourself today!
