The Tyranids are bringing some newly evolved breeds of Gaunts to the Grimdark and they open up some more options for your army.

With Warhammer 40,000: Leviathan coming this summer Games Workshop revealed all the awesome Tyranid minis coming. We’ve been wondering how they will perform on the tabletop and now we have a much better idea after a few rules reveals. The Barbgaunts and Neurogaunts are a pair of new breeds that will add some extra utility to the tabletop!

Barbgaunts

“The Hive Mind loves some living artillery, from the spore mine-firing Biovore to the mighty Exocrine. They’ve now got another beast to add to that list, the Barbgaunts and their bio-cannons – which are actually the brains of the outfit!”

The new Barbgaunts are packing Bio-Cannons that pack a punch and seem solid against infantry targets. They can put out D6 shots, plus they are Blast which means they can generate additional attacks. Furthermore, if the unit doesn’t move, they are hitting on 3+ thanks to the Heavy rule. But that’s not all they do…

Yep! These Bio-Cannons will slow down the target unit and cause them to subtract 2 from their Move characteristic as well as from their Advance and Charge rolls! That’s one way to prevent your meals from escaping. Pair this unit with other units that want to catch their prey up close — or more artillery that wants to take some extra shots!

Neurogaunts

“These little critters scuttle across the battlefield in massed swarms, each carrying a parasitic neurocyte upon their backs. Individually they may not seem up to much, but a big enough unit may be able to drag down a Space Marine or two.”

Okay…statwise, sure, they leave something to be desired. But hey, they aren’t meant to be Terminators or anything. And that Leadership 8+ is a little deceiving for the Tyranids. That’s mostly because of Synapse:

And speaking of Synapse, these little buggers help spread that Synapse net even further:

They don’t generate the Synapse themselves…but they can help spread it around as long as they are in Synapse Range. This can help keep some of your other big bugs or little guys in the fight for much longer!

Both of these units should be a nice boost to the Tyranid ranks and help give your Hive Fleets some extra options on the tabletop. I wonder if we’re going to see even more gaunt-types in the future…

Send in the Gaunts…they look hungry.
