Warhammer 40K Meta Hotness: Space Wolves Wulfen

Space Wolves Wulfen always seem to jump between being amazing and too expensive.  As 9th Edition closes out, the Werewolves of 40k are the Meta Hotness with their efficient beat downs.

The name of any game in 40k is the pressure game.  You have units that move fast, get close, and lock you in your zone with efficient damage.  This is why Orks are doing well, Daemons, and of course the Space Wolves.  The most efficient beat stick for Space Wolves is the Wulfen. They come with their plethora of wounds, cornucopia of damage, and explosion of hits.  Sit around the campfire as I tell tall tales about the crazy Space Werewolves and how they become the boogieman of 9th edition.

Wulfen Have the Stats

These guys have a flat Strength 5 and Toughness 5 stat line that seems pretty good.  The biggest head scratcher about them is the lack of a 3rd wound as they sit comfortably on a Terminator sized base.  It just feels off for the unit. But they make up for it by having a ton of attacks and a nice high movement rage of 8″ to help close the distance and get to stabbing.

Wulfen Have High Damage

Oh and these guys are always in the Assault Doctrine which means any extra rules you might have when you go full assault – will just always be on for these guys.  I hear you like super exploding 6’s to hit? These guys got a ton of it with a Successor chapter plus Space Wolf Super doctrine to allow for two hits for every 6 you roll.  There is nothing grander than hitting for more attacks then you initially started with!  Add in the high damage potential mixed with free wargear and you get a ton of Thunder Hammer attacks.

Fight On death I Hear Is Good Enough to Nerf… for CSMs

Fight-on-Death is extremely powerful as you an easily throw your assault units into the meat grinder, get close, and start punching away even in death.  They had to nerf it for CSM and Creations of Bile but it is still here kicking for Space Wolves.  There is nothing grander than an assault-based army having to kill your Wulfen… in assault – and facing that nasty final surprise.

Aura of Rerolls to Charge

Look these guys can’t set Banners but they can help your Blood Claws reroll their charges if within range of their beastly aroma.  Or their howls.  Something something – wolf based – something something – AROOOOO!!!  These guys are only missing the ability to advance and charge.  This would be awesome but they are currently set up to “counter” punch anyone to death. So while they can push forward they are really just setting the trap.

A Sample List

Good ole Brad Chester took this to the Death or Glory Invitational this past weekend and won it all.  You could just call this Space Wolves Free Upgrades are Awesome list as it really is just a ton of Free Upgrades on whatever Space Wolves can take them with Wulfen to back up the murder spree.  It is a hard army to play as its still just Marines on the table which is most likely why you are not seeing it dominate tabletops.

Scratching for Logan!

These guys are seeing a nice bit of sunshine at the tail end of 9th Edition and I do hope they continue this trend in 10th edition.  We’ll have to wait and see in the next few weeks, when the indexes come out. Then everyone gets to digest them all, and we start to throw down with 10th edition.

Whose a good puppy?
