Revolutionary Girl Utena is still well-known and relevant to this day. And this Utena is an anime prince we’d all like to be rescued by.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of those unforgettable shoujo animes that redefined the genre. It shuffled around gender roles while toeing the line between being hyper-feminine and masculine. And in the background was a story that shifted from high school social structure to ‘revolutionizing the world.’ Despite first airing in 1997, Utena stays recognizable and relevant to this day, and there’s a reason for that.

Utena starts off the series as a story about a normal high school girl… sort of. The first thing we know about her is that she idealizes a mysterious prince she once met and wants to be just like him. And because of this, she refuses to wear the girl’s school uniform when shorts and pants are much more practical for chivalrously defending maidens and jumping into sword duels.

And her take on the uniform is so iconic and perfect. While some school uniform cosplays look similar to all of the others, Utena is instantly recognizable with her military style jacket, epaulets, and short shorts. It’s a fun costume that looks sharp and comfortable. There’s a reason many of us who have grown up with this character has had Utena on our cosplay lists for years. And Erica of K-Sisters Cosplay nails the look! You know that I’m a sucker for any costume that takes a design and over-embellishes it. If there aren’t a lot of details to start and you add gorgeous little extras, I’m instantly in love. And that’s exactly what’s happening here.
