This staple series of sci-fi has been around since the 60s, and the new Star Trek: Infinite game will build on TNG‘s legacy.

The voyages of the starship Enterprise crew have inspired many. Over the years, Star Trek has had many sequel series, spin-offs, movies, novels, comics, and video games. The series has one of the largest catalogs of games out there that even predates even the original Atari company’s founding in 1972, so many of the games are PC games.

Star Trek: Infinite is the latest title to be announced and is a brand-new strategy RPG game being developed by Nimble Giant Entertainment and Paradox Interactive. A teaser was revealed at Summer Game Fest recently showing Federation ships going to confront the Borg outside of a planet. They held off on talking about it to save it for an important day.

Picard Day Gameplay

Star Trek: Infinite was shown off on Picard Day and shows that the game is a strategy RPG game similar to another game made by Paradox Interactive: Stellaris. The game draws inspiration from Star Trek: The Next Generation has players choosing a faction to roam the galaxy and expand into different areas with diplomacy with different worlds.

They also will be creating new bases and fighting different factions who wish to stop your progress. Each major faction will have its own unique traits, stories, quests, and more to make them worth playing each one instead of sticking to just one.

The trailer’s description also gave a small synopsis as well as letting players know what famous Trek factions they can choose from.

“Star Trek: Infinite is a grand strategy experience that lets you play your own Star Trek story as the leader of one of four major factions in the galaxy. Choose from the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, or the Cardassian Union, and lead your chosen faction to victory and prosperity.

Iconic characters such as Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Data, Gowron, Makbar, and Garak are just a few that will be available to their respective factions as recruitable officers. A diverse range of ships is also available, from the Federation’s Defiant-class, the menacing Cardassian Galor-class vessels, the sleek Romulan D’deridex, or even the formidable Klingon Negh’Var battleships as so many more are ready to command.”

The game looks like it will be very heavy in the RPG elements and any fans of Stellaris and Star Trek will be sure to love it. The game’s site explains more of the gameplay elements shown in the trailer in that players can take the route of diplomacy, espionage, warfare, or a mix of all of them when exploring and expanding. They also want to remind the players “with each choice having their civics and ethics and styles of play, your decisions will matter for how successful you will be in reaching your goals.” So choose wisely if you want to get far or go nuts just to see what happens.

Martin Cao, CEO of Nimble Giant Entertainment had this to say about the game to fans looking forward to it:

“As fans of the Star Trek franchise, we are committed to creating a game that stays true to the spirit of The Next Generation, in both its ideals and lore,…Working within these bounds still allows for a wellspring of opportunities. Star Trek: Infinite rewards explorative play, gives players freedom to choose how they respond to the events that unfold in front of them, and provides a strong sense of identity as you lead your empire through the galaxy.”

The press release for the game ends with this wonderful hint at what the game is capable of:

“Whether building the influence of their homeworlds or risking exploration into the unknown, Star Trek: Infinite gives players endless choices and the opportunity to shape the destiny of their favorite Star Trek powers. Fans will experience a game faithful to the lore of a timeless franchise, as they embark on an unforgettable journey through space, encounter new civilizations, and forge a path among the stars.”

Release Info

Right now the game is only announced for release on PC. The Steam Page for the game is up and is ready for adding to your Wishlist if you are already interested in getting the game. There is no word on a release time frame or if it will come to anything else eventually, so keep an eye out on the game’s official Twitter, Instagram, and the Paradox Interactive YouTube channel.

The game isn’t my cup of tea personally but I absolutely understand the audience who loves this sort of thing. Stellaris is highly rated and the site advises that they built the game using it as a template with streamlining it the best they could to fit each faction.

“Star Trek: Infinite is built upon the core systems of Stellaris, leverage the deep and complex system and making them its own. Aspects of these systems have been streamlined and simplified to better resonate with the Star Trek fantasy.”

I am excited for Trek fans to try it out and see if it scratches that itch they have to explore the universe of Star Trek

Boldly go where no one has gone before.
