A new developer diary shows off dynamic weather and other mechanics like dynamic terrain which change over the course of a battle.

Sandstorms, sudden rains, and a whole lot of mud are at play in a new developer diary for Total War: Pharaoh. That’s right. It’s time to talk about how weather makes a difference in the game. And not just in “your screenshots look 20% more dramatic” terms. These new effects will provide a storm which every army will have to weather, pun intended.

But there’s more than just the dynamic weather and terrain at play here. Total War: Pharaoh will allow you to customize your factions like never before. And there are more factionns than you might think, including Hittites and Canaanites.

Total War: Pharaoh – Developer Diary On Weather, Factions, And More

As stated above, the dynamic weather is one of the big new features of Total War: Pharaoh. Specifically in the dev diary we get to see a rainstorm, which results in a lot of mud, the effects of sand on troop types, and then also a sandstorm. All of which can have big impacts on the outcome of each battle.

Commanders will have to keep track of how the terrain changes, and know when to capitalize on a sudden shift in the battlefield. But, there’s a lot more than just inclement weather to worry about. Alongside the new weather effects, there was a look at the ancient legacy mechanic.

These are sort of customizable faction mechanics. You get different boons as you “follow in the footsteps of the great leaders of the past.” Which results in different bonuses and playstyles becoming more incentivized. It’s yet another way that you can kit out your faction, which is good, because there’s only so different each faction gets from one another. Every little bit of customization adds more depth and replayability.

And these mechanics aren’t just for the Egyptian lords, either. Hittites and Canaanites can, if they seize the right territories, start claiming these boons for themselves. Ancient legacies don’t discriminate, as long as history starts back down its inevitable course.
