Goatboy’s Grimdark Armylist: What to Build While 10th is Unbalanced?

Goatboy here, with some tips on what to collect and NOT collect while we wait for Warhammer 40K to get rebalanced.

Of course we also have the first released Codexes coming for Tyranids and Space Marines too so while I would love to throw up a list – it is hard to really put it all together with new points looming.  So where does that leave a armylist brewer like me?  It leaves me to build certain things that I know I will still want even if they get kicked in the teeth a bit.

As you have been reading I am for sure not an Aeldari player.  They are an army I never liked and with the way they are brutally wrecking stuff right now I have no desire to even try to jump into them.  It is just not worth it at this point for me and while I could throw out a list it most likely won’t make it thru the hits that I hope are coming.  Heck I’ve played one game versus the Aeldari and knew it wouldn’t be exciting beyond just playing a good friend of mine.

Welcome to Static-hammer, Population: Boring

But hey – we know something is coming and will get a whole new refresh of 40k sooner than later.  I think a lot of the grind right now with “Index 40k” is a lot of the top armies for your factions look the same.  Having only one real detachment (two if you are one of the Chapter Marine armies with rules) makes it hard to really find something new within the pages of the books.  The best units are already laid out, the best characters are always chosen, and the game is sorta locked in the way it is locked in.  That isn’t a bad thing especially in what is a young edition so will just have to wait and see.

On the front of what I want to play well I have some hopes for the fixes coming out.  I really want to see assault lists come back with better rules because those styles of armies are a lot more interesting to myself.  There is one thing when you just know how to point the right amount of firepower at range to remove the enemy unit.  But it’s a whole other thing to correctly bait, move, and stack your assault in ways to win the battle getting up close and personal.  It is always how I find the most enjoyment in games and usually the best “success” I have had at events is when my assault nonsense actually works.

What is Safe To Start Collecting?

Thus why I hope to see some CSM stuff get working better like my waves of Possessed and other 3-Wound monsters.  It does mean I should finally finish painting my Abaddon (just built him this last week) and at least a unit of Accursed cultists and their leader unit.  Which leads me into the discussion at hand – what do you work on while we wait?

I would say if you are working on something in the top lists I might slow down on it.  Especially if it is one of the best things from that army etc.  It has a good chance of getting hit hard with the nerf-bat. All your collecting and hobby effort might not be worth it when trying to get your top of the meta army on the tabletop in a couple months.

Of course you could just start on new stuff too.  We got the first two books coming and if you don’t have a Marine army yet now is a great time to get one started.  Same with the Tyrannids too especially if you don’t have any painted so far.

Praying for World Eaters & Orky Goodness

You can see on my Instagram the last few things I worked on for me which has me finishing off some Soul Grinder action.  I hope GW keeps those guys ok as I would like to get a chance to play them at an event or even my World Eaters that I never got to play with.  That is the army that hit me hard end of last edition as I got a bunch ready to go and bam – they got nerfed so hard in the index they are just hopeless.  I hope they get shifted back a bit so they can at least show up with two waves of jerks instead of the pray the one wave wet noodles their way to victory.

Hopefully this next week we get into the nitty gritty on some new list stuff, new army refreshes, and other fun things.  I still always want to try and get a full assault Ork nonsense list with a ton of characters and squiggs but it always collapses after I finish a unit or two.  One day I will get my full Red Orks moving and hopefully a new book will get me there.

Until next week – keep painting, keep building, and hopefully the game will get rebalanced sooner than later.
