The director behind Kick Ass and Kingsman is back with a new spy story with a twist. Henry Cavill is Argylle.

This story has layers. Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) is an introverted novelist. She’s known for her series of spy novels featuring the debonaire Agent Argylle and his team.

“She’s agoraphobic. Her idea of a hot date is staying at home, writing more of her book, with her cat for company. She’s not a victim, because she’s really successful and really funny and really smart, but she has issues.”

She’s drawn into the real world of espionage when her books start to get too close to the plans of a sinister underground syndicate. On what seems like an average train trip, a spy (Sam Rockwell) shows up to save her from being kidnapped by the syndicate (run by Brian Cranston). She and her adorable cat Alfie are dragged into a covert world filled with danger. Nothing is what it seems, and the lines between reality and Elly’s spy novels blur.

Argylle First Trailer

“I’m guilty of handsome spies with great haircuts and wonderfully cut suits. In reality, if you’re a spy, it’s a pretty dumb thing to do. You’re going to be the guy that gets noticed in the room. A good spy should be the person you least expect the spy to be. And that’s what this movie is all about. It’s like Roger Moore said about James Bond—what sort of spy walks into a room and everyone knows his name and what he likes to drink? It’s ridiculous. We’re having fun destroying these tropes.”

They really did Cavill dirty with that hairpiece, even if it’s supposed to be an exaggeration. It’s a tall, more organized version of Henry Spencer’s quaff in Eraserhead. And it is on its way to becoming Guile’s weird hightop/pedestal combo; just needs a little more length and a lot of hairspray.

Cast & Details

The cast includes Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, and Samuel L. Jackson. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, Argylle is based on a script written by Jason Fuchs.
