Last week Ahsoka found herself in a weird, dark place like nothing we’ve seen before. Only, we have; that’s the World Between Worlds.

If you’re one of the many people watching Ahsoka who haven’t also watched Star Wars Rebels, you may be a little confused about where it was that Ahsoka found herself at the end of last week’s episode.

That is the World Between Worlds. This mystical force-heavy place has shown up before, and while it’s always at least a little mysterious, it may help you going forward in the show to know where we’ve seen it before, under what context, and what happens when somebody finds themself in the World Between Worlds.

The World Between Worlds

Also known as the Vergence Scatter, this is a mystical plan of existence within the Force. It reminds me a lot of the “Between” in the Dragonriders of Pern series. But if you’re not familiar, this is basically a dark space between worlds that can act as a path to anywhere.

The World Between Worlds is thought of as a collection of doorways connecting different bits of space and time together and even forming pathways between them. Filoni has revealed that his own inspiration for this was the ‘Wood Between the Worlds’ in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.

The World Between Worlds was described in sacred texts in the Jedi Temple on Ahch-To. And at one point even Darth Sidious was on the search for a way to access this place. He claimed that it ‘created a conduit between the living and the dead,” and that those in “control of this plane would possess mastery over all of existence.” Luckily, he quickly lamented how unexpectantly difficult finding and accessing it actually was.

When It’s Appeared Before

We see The World Between Worlds in the animated Star Wars series, Rebels. It was discovered that the Loth-Wolves, animals native to the planet Lothal, had a natural connection to this place and could travel through it similar to hyperspace travel. Because of this, paintings of Loth-Wolves shown in paintings associated with the Force Gods known as the Mortis Gods helped point the way to the portal to this Force-powerful pathway space.

In Rebels, Ezra Bridger and Ahsoka Tano both found themselves here. Ezra was attempting to change the tragic fate of his master, Kanan Jarrus, and pulled Ahsoka into space in order to save her from an event in her own past. In the end, Ahsoka convinces Ezra to accept his master’s death and learn to move forward, pointing out that without his sacrifice their whole team would have likely perished.

Knowing that Darth Sidious was attempting to access this time-space pathway, they left, closing the portal behind them. But both were able to find their way back to it on their own and when needed.

What It Means This Time

It’s hard to speculate what Ahsoka’s return there will mean for the next episode and the rest of the series. Usually, this is a place of knowledge and revelation. And usually, a reunion with her own master, Anakin, should be a good thing. But the swelling of the ‘Darth Vader’ theme as the episode ended has me thinking that Ahsoka’s entry to this place won’t be a good one.

It’s possible she was brought there by the Force to learn something necessary about the past or future. Or it could be that Ezra pulled her into this space, or a version of Anakin did the same.
