Necromunda: Why The Terrain Kits Are So Good

The Zone Mortalis Terrain and the Ash Waste sets are super modular and a lot of fun to hobby with. Here’s why.

Games Workshop knows how important good terrain is and how much of an impact it can make on your gaming experience. This is pretty clear if you’ve built any of their more recent (the last ~5 years) worth of terrain kits. Specifically since the re-launch of Necromunda. They had some goals and ideas that have made those kits a lot of fun to build and customize. But there were a few things that I didn’t know about them — and now I like them even more.

Yes, They Planned That

via Warhammer Community

“The Ash Wastes terrain sets have been created with this standardisation in mind, so a ‘tall’ platform (or Hab) is the same height as a Sector Mechanicus strut or two Zone Mortalis Columns.”

Here’s a look at the high of the structures from the WarCom site. As you can see, those platforms all line-up pretty darn well. And that’s essentially three different terrain sets. I knew that the Sector Mechancius kits were the same size as other 40k terrain kits (like the Sector Imperialis), but I didn’t realize that they would ALSO work with Zone Mortalis and the Ash Wastes sets, too. I mean, I makes a lot of sense as the scale is the same. But at the same time, this opens up a whole bunch of hobby possibilities to play around with.

Here’s another example of mixing the Ash Wastes terrain with the stairs from Zone Mortalis. And this is just a tip of the terrain iceberg. GW mentions all three of these sets, but I don’t know if even they get into the idea of mixing Sector Imperialis sets, too! Aside from all these sets working out to be the same height, there’s also another feature that makes mixing them work so well:

“The two Ash Wastes platforms also share the fittings of the Sector Mechanicus floors, which allow for them to sit on top of the rail and clip into place.”

That’s pretty great news for anyone that wants to really go nuts with platforms. The clips really do help keep your cat-walks from giving out when there are models on them. And it doesn’t stop there…

“The large corner sections of the Sector Mechanicus floors will fit around the large Hab platform, and can be attached with the clips provided. This allows a huge range of customisation between the two ranges making it easy to blend the factory elements of Sector Mechancius sets with the outland Habs of the Ash Wastes terrain.”

This is really, really cool news. I’m not entirely sure who or what part of the Design Studio team had the forethought to make all these kits this compatible and modular, but THANK YOU to whoever you are. You are a real hobby hero.

Now, if you’ll excuse me I’ve got some terrain kits I need to go mess with and see what crazy structures I can create. Necromunda terrain just got a whole lot more interesting for me!

Oh the possibilities just opened up. Let me know in the comments if you’ve experimented with mixing these sets or not!
