We’re ready to save the world with Aang once more. But in the meantime let’s add Appa and Momo to our current D&D adventures.

We’ve finally started getting a look at what the newest live-action adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender will look like… And I think we’re ready to start getting cautiously optimistic. Sure, there was that 2010 film we dare not speak of, and okay, Netflix has produced some live-action-adaptation stinkers in the past. But One Piece was good, and so far the trailers for the Aang Gaang’s adventure look promising! We won’t be able to say for sure until February, but right now, we’re willing to allow ourselves to be a little excited about this show. So with a few more months until its premiere, let’s jump back into the world of Avatar and play D&D with two of our favorite Airbender creatures. We’re playing D&D with…

Appa

Sky Bison- or something similar- would honestly be a pretty easy addition to make to any D&D campaign. They’re large, flying, and mostly neutral creatures. Sort of like horses, they’re not evil or good on their own. They just sometimes are domesticated and work with people who have their own alignments. And most adventurers would probably use their own Sky Bison much the same way the Gaang utilized Appa in Avatar.

For D&D our Sky Bison’s biggest ability is to fly and carry lots of people and gear while doing so. But they’re also giant and strong, giving them some other abilities of more dangerous creatures, too. A strong bite, sharp horns, and a powerful tail area all ready melee weapons. But much like a dragon may have a breath weapon, Sky Bison can utilize airbending for a wind attack of their own.

While a wild Sky Bison may usually be peaceful, you’d want to be careful in approaching or attacking one. And if you have a domesticated Sky Bison of your own, they will use these same abilities to help and protect you and your team.

Momo

A lot smaller and a lot different in abilities than the Sky Bison, Winged Lemurs are the other well-known companions of The Last Airbender. Chances are your lemur companion won’t be very useful for attacking enemies or keeping your party safe. They won’t be carrying a lot of goods or supplies, and can’t help you cover great distances quickly.

But where a Momo of your own may come in handy is their ability to go off and get stuff. Winged Lemurs have rogue-like abilities and can scamper around almost entirely ignored, and grab little things to bring back to their masters. Will they bring back the right thing? That’s up to the dice. What will they come back with? That’s up to the DM! But they’ll come back with something, and that’s what counts, right?

Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that there is already a tabletop RPG system for the Avatar universe. Much more than fully funded on Kickstarter in 2021 and published by Magpie Games, Avatar Legends lets you play an entirely Avatar adventure as opposed to fitting your favorite creatures and characters into the D&D system. But we love both systems here and want you to have options!

How would you make Appa and Momo for a D&D setting? Are you excited about the upcoming live-action Avatar series, or nervous about it? What movie, show, book, comic, or game should I make sheets from next time? Let us know in the comments!
