A general is only as good as the army they lead, so make sure you have the best Ixalan cards possible in the 99 to boost your MTG Commander deck.

Lost Caverns of Ixalan has been out for a while now, and Magic players are already finding some nasty combos. Between the new mechanics and some of the beefiest creatures we’ve seen in a while, Ixalan had more than ghosts hidden in the caverns.

Of course, with a massive collection at your disposal, it can be hard to pick out good cards, especially the ones that fly under the radar. While this isn’t an exhaustive list, these five cards are incredible pieces for your MTG Commander library.

Roaming Throne

If you’re playing typal with ANY abilities, you’ll want to add the Roaming Throne. Not only does it count as whatever type you want, from Slivers to Squirrels, but whenever a triggered ability of a creature of that type goes off, the Throne makes it go off again. That can make mediocre cards amazing and already incredible cards like Elenda or Hakbal obscene. Plus, with ward, it won’t be easy to shift in the traditional way.

Thousand Moons Smithy

While this one does require you to be playing tokens, if you are, this is an almost auto-include. Thousand Moons Smithy gives you a beefed-up Soldier token the turn it hits the battlefield that will be a 2/2 at minimum. Once you have five artifacts or creatures, you can flip the smithy over to a land that gives you ANOTHER Soldier whenever you use the land to cast artifacts or creatures. Since each one you play will buff the Soldier, that’s an easy ask, and you can make an army of death in no time flat.

Bonehoard Dracosaur

One of the Dinosaur stars of Ixalan, this one has the added benefit of also being a Dragon. It’s a pretty incredible force multiplier in any deck, though, regardless of type. It lets you exile cards for casting, giving you quasi-advantage, and regardless of whether you cast/play the cards or not, you get something out of it. With just a little bit of extra support, this Dracosaur can put you leagues ahead of your opponent in no time.

Subterranean Schooner

A bit more of a niche piece, this is still an incredibly effective piece of card advantage. With the new explore mechanic being the star of this show, this 3/4 Vehicle can turn your smaller tokens into big threats in no time. Plus, since crewing a vehicle doesn’t check for summoning sickness, you can make sure your creatures are pulling their weight as soon as they hit the field. In a deck that already likes to explore, the Schooner will sail you and your deck right to victory.

Diamond Pick-Axe

A humble Equipment, the Diamond Pick-Axe is nonetheless a powerful piece. It’s indestructible and gives +1/+1, which is already pretty great. However, its real power comes from the ability to make a Treasure whenever the equipped creature attacks. Note that it doesn’t have to deal damage; just declare an attack. Popping this on a creature like Caprocti Sunborn or Jolene the Plunder Queen will give you surprising value, all for a little mine craft.
