At long last the Dragon has been slain and an undead warrior has risen to replace him. Here are Magic: the Gathering’s top EDH Commanders of the week.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering, where you use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.

EDHRec.com is a great source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one. They also provide a definitive ranking of which Commanders are ranking the highest each week. These are the top five Commanders for this week, based on decks built and logged playtime.

Pantlaza, Sun-Favored

Jumping up to the top spot we have Pants Laser himself, the discovering dino. I’m not surprised at all to see the Raging Raptor this high up; discover is an insane mechanic, and triggering off something as huge as toughness is a pretty big deal. With all the powerful Dino triggers in the game, this is just an insane piece, and it comes in cheaper than Gishath.

Gishath, Sun’s Avatar

Gishath takes a step back this week, but that doesn’t make it a weak leader. Gishath is probably still one of the strongest typal creatures in the game, only falling behind Pantalza for the non-creature spells. Still, it will be interesting to see how these two shape up in the coming weeks.

Hakbal of the Surging Soul

Surging up to the third spot is Hakbal, the merfolk with the map. I called last week that Hakbal would shoot up once folks figured out his combos, and third isn’t a bad position. This explore enabler can make your Merfolk so deadly so fast, and his secondary ramp is even better.

Edgar Markov

Our only newcomer this week is a deadly Commander from the days of yore. Edgar is the master of Vampires, and he makes even more just by existing. Alongside his eminence trigger, he’s a nasty beater, and he gets bigger every time he attacks. With all the new Vamps in the Ixalan precon, his already considerable value has skyrocketed.

Tymna the Weaver

There must always be a Stark in Winterfell, and there must always be a Tymna in the Top Five. Partner remains a powerful ability and the reprint of Thrasios, her favorite buddy, is keeping her going strong. Even the wave of new critters couldn’t keep this spider lady down.
