Pathfinder gets a major update with the release of the Pathfinder Player Core and GM Core rulebooks. See what life is like post-OGL.

The folks at Paizo have been hard at work on a “remastered” Pathfinder 2nd Edition. You’ve seen the playtests. You’ve seen the field updates. And now, finally, the books are here. Paizo released today the Pathfinder Player Core and Pathfinder GM Core rulebooks. Meaning that you can now jump right into a remastered Golarion.

There’s a ton of differences in the game. But a lot of the big pain points are gone. The classes play differently with updated feats and options to pick from. And at the heart of it all, a shift away from the disastrous Open Gaming License which started to crumble earlier this year when WotC scored among the biggest own goals in gaming.

Pathfinder Player Core and GM Core

The Pathfinder Remaster Project “removes carried-over OGL content” from the game. And these books collectively update the core rules, incorporating several years’ worth of errata and design shifts. As part of the ongoing process, these books are under the ORC license now. The exodus of players from 5E prompted a run on Pathfinder books, which resulted in a new printing order that will be the very last of the “legacy” Pathfinder 2E books. Starting with the revised Pathfinder Player Core, there’s an all-new Pathfinder core set now.

And it isn’t just the license and updates. There have been some comprehensive changes to the rules. Ancestries and heritages have expanded. We’ve seen how mixed heritages, like the Dromaar, can play with choices from two different parent heritages. Spellcasting got a major overhaul, with rebalanced cantrips and focus spells in the works.

Classes that were in need of an update got a remaster. Wizards and Witches, in particular, will see new options in the way they play. The Witch is more familiar-focused. The Wizard focuses on arcane schools, but not in the way you think. Instead of “spell schools” it’s, like, actual school schools. Which is extremely promising.

This also gave Paizo the opportunity to gather some of their most extensive GM advice as well. In theĀ Pathfinder GM Core, you’ll find options for playing and running vastly different campaign styles. For making your own adventures and adventure paths. The whole nine yards, so to speak.

And not far around the corner, are the other two books in the remastered core set: Monster Core and Player Core 2, which will have all the advanced goodness you could want.

Stay tuned for more of the Pathfinder Remastered Edition.
