It’s time to breakdown the Warhammer 40,000 reveals from the World Championships of Warhammer. Who’s the best and the not-so-great!

Hopefully you saw all the new models from 40k. There were a fair chunk spread across Warhammer 40k, Kill Team, and even Necromunda (which I’m counting as part of 40k because it’s the same universe). There were some surprises and some nice updates. And a bit of a let down — but we’ll get to all that. For now, let’s chat about these new kits and the big winners.

Warhammer 40k World Championship Reveals – The Big Winners

Dark Angels

Between the return of Asmodai and the new Deathwing Knight Terminators the Dark Angels really came out swinging this go around. Asmodai is a great character from the lore and it looks like he’s got a Primaris Upgrade. Remember when that used to be dangerous? Guess the Space Marines figured out how to do it safely. ANYHOW, he’s back and looking terrifying as ever!

I appreciate the various options that GW provided. I like the smoke trails but I’m also glad those are optional. They seem like a fun challenge but also something that could easily be messed up. I also really like the hood/non-hood option to show off that terrifying helm of his. Nice work. As for the Deathwing Knights, I like that they got up-scaled to match the new Terminators. Looking at it, I supposed it was only a matter of time before one of the most iconic Terminator units got updated. Considering the base Terminator kit got resized this one was looking us right in the face. Oh well. Looks good either way!

Night Lords

Holy crap these Night Lords look amazing! Now, the paint jobs from GW are doing some work here but these Kill Team minis are impressive. The Chainsword with the skeletal rib cage around it is really impressive! And yeah, I know that these models are based off the current Chaos Space Marine kit but this just makes me that much more excited about them. If GW can create what’s essentially an upgrade kit to the CSM Legionaries kit that makes them Legion-specific, well sign me up for more of that please! I know that there’s the BIG CSM Legions out there that have Codexes and their Traitor Daemon Primarch. But this opens up the possibilities for those other Legions. Imagine an Iron Warriors Kill Team. Or Word Bearers. Or…well you get the idea. I sure hope we see these upgrade packs or some other option to get Night Lords like this outside of just the Kill Team box.

Palanite Enforcers

I’ve been wondering when the Private Security forces of Necromunda were going to get a vehicle to patrol the Ash Wastes with. Now we know! The Tauros Venator looks like a great kit for Necromunda and a fitting option for the Palanite Enforcers. That said, I know I’m not the only one thinking what 40k armies could use the Tauros. Astra Militarum and the Genestealer Cult immediately spring to mind. I’m also betting there might be some Mek Boyz out there looking to get one of these in their Mekshop! I think this vehicle has a lot of room for conversions and I really want to get my hands on one (or three) in the future. This was a big win for Necromunda and 40k hobbyists out there.

We Were Hoping For More…

Necrons

So we had guessed there might be another character on the way for the Necrons. I wasn’t expecting any one of them in particular but I was expecting at least one of them. And, well, expectations met. I do like the updated Orikan model — don’t get wrong. It’s certainly an upgrade. But I’m feeling just-whelmed by this announcement. Not over or under. This is kind of the minimum I was expecting and GW cleared that bar. I’ll be honest, I was really hoping for MORE Necrons as this puts their new model count up to three when the new Codex arrives. That’s not nothing. And the Necrons did get a huge update when 9th edition hit. So yeah. I get it. I do like the way his back looks like one of the Canoptek Wraiths/Spyders. That IS a nice touch.

Adeptus Mechanicus

At least we’re getting a Crusade book in the Pariah Nexus. But I was really expecting to see more from the Adeptus Mechanicus in terms of models. It looks like their new Codex is just going to have the one model with it and that’s…well, that’s pretty light. Is that a disappointment? Yeah, kinda. I feel for Ad Mech players who were hoping for something a bit more meaty to chew on for their release. Unfortunately it seems like Ad Mech got the short straw for this release schedule. Enjoy your new sniper.

I really liked seeing all the new reveals for upcoming 40k miniatures. The Ad Mech and Necrons are on the way and it looks like Dark Angels aren’t that far behind them. I was hoping to see more from the machines so hopefully their codexes bring the goods in the rules department.

What did you think of the 40k model reveals? I still think the Night Lords and Necromunda were the big hits because of the possibilities…
