The new Necron Codex is coming very soon and it’s got some new Crusade Rules to play with. How will you allocate your power?

With the upcoming Codex: Necrons we’re expecting a full slate of all the standard things you’ve coming to expect in a codex. One of those things is the Crusade Rules which are the best way to play campaign-style narrative games. Today Games Workshop is showcasing a few of the rules you’ll get access. Plus you’ll get a look at how you’ll need to manage your “power” for your Tomb World with the Awakening Points.

“Rousing a planet-spanning sepulchre after long aeons of dreamless rest isn’t easy. It’s a steady, multi-stage process where the rites of awakening overseen by Crypteks must be closely observed. Lest something go awry, power must be carefully allocated as required between the three primary Systems of your tomb world – Command, Reanimation, and Translocation.”

Manage Your Power – Choose Wisely

The three “power systems” of Command, Reanimation, and Translocation determines which bonuses can be active for your army. You’ll have three Awakening Points to allocate but you’ll only be able to do that when you complete a system’s Awakening Agenda. You’ve got to earn your power.

As example, here’s Immortal Servitude one of the Reanimation System Awakening Agendas:

When your army recovers wounds from Reanimation Protocols, every 12 wounds nets your Warlord 1XP (to a max of 3). And when you recover 12 or more wounds you can also select a Reanimation System by allocating 1 Awakening point.

Each time you allocate a point to a System, you activate one of that Systems bonuses. These provide buffs for your battles. Here’s another example with Resurrection Flux:

The cool part about this Crusade system is what happens when you allocate all of your Awakening Points. This allows you to trigger Master System abilities. These are quite potent and also provide some flexibility as well. Here’s a look at Contra-Mortis Protocol from the Reanimation System:

Notice the large “OR” in the middle there. That means you’ll have to choose either the top or bottom ability to be active. Both of them are quite potent in their own right — so choose wisely!

Once you’ve activated a Master System ability, your chosen Awakening Points reset and any current System bonuses deactivate. You’ve essentially rebooted the Tomb World and have to build up again. You’ll have to go back and earn more chances to allocate Awakening Points again.

“Plus, you can only access Master Abilities from Systems with at least one Awakening point, meaning you’ll need to decide between going all-in on specific Systems, or spreading out your resources for flexibility.”

So how will you manage your points? It’s a different set up upgrades and seems like a unique system for Crusade games for Necrons. It’s probably going to feel like your army is rising in power and then when it crests it comes crashing back down to “normal” — seems like a perfect fit for Narrative games!

Even More Crusade Goodies

As with all Crusade rules there’s going to be other rules to explore. There’s more unique Agendas to score, more Requisitions to acquire, Battle Traits and Battle Scars, and more. Oh and Relics…can’t forget about those relics to unearth.
