It’s almost the Year of the Dragon, but even that couldn’t save them from Phyrexians and spider ladies.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering, where you use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.

EDHRec.com is a great source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one. They also provide a definitive ranking of which Commanders are ranking the highest each week. These are the top five Commanders for this week, based on decks built and logged playtime.

Pantlaza, Sun-Favored

The Raptor King is still going strong in the top spot, and it seems no one can take him down. Discover is proving to be one of the strongest new mechanics, and Pantlaza is the best at making it pop. Look for more ridiculousness once Ravnica’s big stompy buff spells drop.

Hakbal of the Surging Soul

My boy has finally unseated Gishath, and with all the Simic on the way, it’s only up from here. Explore is right behind discover for powerful abilities, and Hakbal is one heck of an enabler. Simic loves its counters, and Hakbal does too, so it’s a match made in heaven.

Gishath, Sun’s Avatar

Gisath has dropped down to the third place spot, but still maintaining Top 3 dominance. Power gaming is still a thing, and Gishath doesn’t mess around with fancy tricks and keywords. If you just want to stomp a hole in the battlefield, Gishath is the way to go.

Atraxa, Praetor’s Voice

Atraxa is back-sa, and I’m honestly surprised it took her this long. Keyword soup plus proliferate plus sitting firmly in infect colors is a pretty potent combination. I think the Fallout decks are going to do wonders for her.

Tymna the Weaver

After a long absence, Tymna has returned to remind everyone she’s the OG. While she isn’t much without a partner, she has so many options that you’re spoiled for choice. Nice to see her making her way back into the Top 5, and I’m interested to see how the Orzhov reprints will change her decklist.

What are your thoughts on this week’s commanders?
