Warhammer 40K: Five Things We Want From 2024

Warhammer 40k has grown beyond the tabletop. Here’s what we’d like to see from the franchise this year.

2023 is a wrap, and what a year for 40K it’s been. The year saw the announcement and release of not just a number of side games, but of the 10th Edition of Warhammer 40,000. As such it was a year full of change and transitions. It was also a year that 40K cleaned its slate, wiping away all the old books. It’s only been a few months since the new Edition release, and the game is still pretty fresh, with lots of opportunities. Let’s take a look at what we’d like to see from 40K this year.

5. A Few Months of Good Balance

Look, we all know 10th Edition didn’t really start off perfectly balanced. Despite having a fresh slate of the datasheets a few things were off kilter. While it is easy to point to Eldar as being a major problem, they weren’t alone. A number of units and weapon/rules types caused some big issues. Now thankfully, GW has been working pretty hard to correct these issues with a series of FAQs and errata, some even before the game was fully out. So things are better and are certainly moving in the right direction. They aren’t quite perfect yet, many people still think Eldar are a bit too good, but we are getting there. So all I ask is that they keep at it and maybe, just maybe, give us a few nice months of a balanced tabletop game.

4. Lets Get Some New Codexes!

Compared to previous years 2023 saw very few Codexes released (five compared to the eleven in 2022). This has left most armies still playing with Index forces. Now I’m not saying I want a deluge of Codexes or rushed releases, but I am looking forward to more than a handful of armies having their full rules. Not everyone is going to get a Codex in 2024, but it’s going to move in the right direction. Plus, and these books are going to give us a much better idea of what we are looking at with 10th Edition.

3. GW to Iron Out Its Supply Issues

It’s not really a secret that GW has had some issues in the past few years with the availability of product. Some of this is way outside of their hands and the result of various global events. Part of it also likely has to do with production being tied up in the release of several new games and launch sets. Now, maybe GW is perfectly happy with this? fter all constantly selling out of product is better than having way too much sitting around! However, it has made it kind of hard to get into the game and build armies for some people.  As such, I’m really hoping that 2024, with most of the new game launches behind us, will see things get back to normal on this front.

2. Something to Happen With the Aeldari

This is another one I’ve been wanting for years. 7th Edition saw a huge advancement in Aeldari lore, with the return of Harlequins as a real faction and the introduction of the Ynnari and their massive story potential. Yvraine was directly involved with bringing back Guilliman! Then…. all of that went nowhere. In the years since, the Ynnari plot basically hasn’t advanced at all, at most getting some minor lip service in some event books.

Though 2022 saw a new large combined Aeldari book, it really didn’t do much to expand the lore or move the story forward. The Ynnari still feels like an afterthought. Even the 10th Index feels the same way.  We did get new models and updated models, thank the Gods, but not really any of the forward movement the faction needs.

1.The Announcement of Some Amazon Shows

2022 ended with the mother of all 40K news. GW, Amazon and Henry Cavill are teaming up to make 40K (GW?) content. The end of 2023 upped the ante with a formal agreement being signed between GW and Amazon to produce shows and other media. That still leaves us with basically no information on what is actually being made. We now know for sure that something is going to get made, just not what or when. It is not even clear what era of 40K they are going to focus on, though we have some ideas in that regard. We are really hoping to get some clues and maybe even announcements this year. Fingers crossed!
