Wyrmspan is “inspired” by Wingspan, but is a totally separate game where you entice dragons to roost in your caves.

Stonemaier Games have announced their latest release, which is “inspired by the mechanisms of Wingspan“. The game is called Wyrmspan, fittingly, and boasts 16+ unique elements to make it distinct from Wingspan. Not only is Wingspan an absolute gold star of a game itself, but Stonemaier Games has a fantastic track record of its releases, including Scythe, Viticulture, and plenty more.

Wyrmspan Overview

In Wyrmspan, players take the role of amateur dracologists. They must excavate an unexplored secret labyrinth in order to find and coax the dragonic residents to roost in their caves instead.

In each game, players build a sanctuary for all sizes and shapes of dragon. Each sanctuary begins with a single excavated space within their Crimson Cavern, Golden Grotto, and Amethyst Abyss. As the game progresses, players will excavate additional space within each cave. Like in Wingspan, Wyrmspan is a game about finding the perfect combination of dragons in order to chain their abilities and earn the favor of the Dragon Guild.

How is Wyrmspan Different?

It’s easy to assume Wyrmspan is simply a re-skin on Wingspan. But that is certainly not the case. It’s closer to a 2nd edition but also separate enough that that’s also not fully accurate. Still, there are plenty of key differences.

  • Players must Excavate a new space before being able to roost a dragon there.
  • Hatchlings can be found as an egg and will offer powerful one-time benefits when grown.
  • Guilds offer in-game and end-game bonuses.
  • Dragons are intelligent and have personality traits players will need to consider.
  • No dice, no bonus cards, no pink powers.
  • And plenty more.

You can read the full list of notable changes and read the full rulebook on the Wyrmspan official page.

Wyrmspan is currently planned to launch end of January 2024.
