Fans of Star Trek Discovery will be delighted by the newest announced book for the Star Trek Adventures role-playing game, the Federation-Klingon War.

In the days when all the even-numbered Star Trek movies were good, The United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire were at war. And while it eventually came to an end in a movie that most would describe as “You know what? That was pretty good for a Star Trek movie,” it’s remained a fascinating era for nerds.

The first season of Star Trek: Discovery explored this era. It’s about to come into the limelight once again.

Modiphius recently announced a new expansion for the Star Trek Adventures tabletop role-playing game. The new expansion titled The Federation-Klingon War Tactical Campaign Book is a six-mission campaign arc that closely follows the Klingon War arc of the first season of Star Trek Discovery.

Inside the new book are all new playable species, optional rules, new character talents, and more than 20 war-focused mission briefs that will allow you to do your own “procedurally generated campaign” set during this time period. Let’s take a look

Modiphius Announces The Federation-Klingon War Tactical Campaign

This one’s exactly what it says on the tin, folks. Coming later this year, The Federation-Klingon War Tactical Campaign Book will beam in all things war in Star Trek Adventures. While the campaign book promises to explore a story that parallels the first season of Star Trek Discovery, the book also boasts a lot of freedom for players and GMs:

This tactical campaign enables you and your group to explore what was happening elsewhere in the Federation during this perilous time. With a plethora of additional rules variations to embrace the emotional toil of being thrust into a war, this campaign gives you the tools to build exciting narratives during the war.

Now, theoretically, this is focused on the Federation-Klingon war, but it doesn’t seem like it would be too hard to take these rules and retool them for other infamous wars that the United Federation of Planets has been embroiled in.

If you wanted to take on the harrowing war between the Federation and the Dominion at the end of Deep Space 9, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not that hard to adapt. Especially since one of the big new shiny toys in the book is a “campaign overlay.”

This book also includes an all-new, procedurally generated campaign overlay that gives players the opportunity to take on the roles of admirals assigning assets to deal with Klingon threats across the Galaxy.

Described as a sort of mini-game in its own right, the tactical overlay sounds a bit like faction mechanics you may have sampled in other games, with a focus on tracking growing threats and enemy maneuvers.

Alongside the new overlay are 6 playable species, including the Aenar, the Arcadians, the Ariolo, the Betelgeusians, the Coridanite, and Megarite, as well as 15 new character talents, over 20 war-focused mission briefs, 25 new starships, and a whole system for representing the toll that war takes on a character. Because it wouldn’t be Star Trek without pointed social commentary.

Pre-Order The Federation-Klingon War Tactical Campaign Book today.

And get ready to invent, then ignore a whole universe-shaping plot centered around what is and isn’t Klingon blood.
