The Warhammer 40K Balance Dataslate update a few weeks ago changed how Ignore All Modifiers works. Here are the best characters in the 10th Edition to take advantage.

We’re looking at one of the big updates from the Balance Dataslate change we had a few weeks ago.  The big change to how Ignore All Modifiers works now means this ability can basically turn off powerful toughness-increasing options.  In some ways, this feels like a nice nerf aimed at the Necron C’Tan builds out there. It still just feels a bit weird in the implementation of how the rule is worded.  But hey, this is why FAQs are here, and it helps me build out a list of the top five options to utilize this rule.

#5 – Grey Knight Grand Master

This is one of the leader characters that help add the Ignore All Modifier power to some Terminator units for the Grey Knight codex.  The only thing keeping this from showing up all over the table is the sheer fact that Grey Knights have some issues killing things.  It is a detachment/army that almost feels like it’s good enough – even with the updates they got in the Balance Dataslate to some of their weapons.  I feel like a simple tweak of empowering abilities to units might help push them over the edge, or just some shifts in the game from vehicles being heavily used and tough units showing up on the tabletop.

#4 – Trajan Valoris – Custodes

The original person trying to utilize the Ignore All Modifiers rule in the beginning due to the nature and power of the Custodes Detachment.  He might show up again as reusing Stratagems has been tweaked, and the overall power of him coming in hot with some Wardens might be a good thing.  Still, Trajan is expensive, and for all his awesome punching action, he and his unit do not shoot nearly hard enough.  Still – it is something to think about. Custodes were one of the most powerful assault armies out there and are starting to show up again with their tweak to Devastating wound saves.

#3 – Grim Demeanour Enhancement on a Character for Leagues of Votann

A simple enhancement that grants the bearer and its unit the ability to reroll battle shock tests and ignore all modifiers.  A pretty powerful thing to add to a unit of Thunderkyn that can have sustain hits d3 with a damage 3 gun and lets it pour damage all over you like some kind of freak.  This is something that will show up, delete a C’Tan, and let the Space Dwarf player cackle as he has judged your model as not worthy.

#2 – Stratagem – Unbowed Conviction – Ironstorm Spearhead – Marines

This is a simple 1CP stratagem that lets you target one Adeptus Astartes unit that is below its starting strength.  This grants them the ability to ignore all modifiers and delete something with whatever they are shooting at you.  Do you like that Gladiator sitting across the field?  Oh did you do some wounds to it and didn’t kill it?  Well, take some murder lasers to the face and like it!

#1 – Mortarion – Death Guard

I heard you like to have an aura that lets you and all your friends ignore modifiers?  Oh, you want to see all your Plagueburst Crawlers and Myphitic Blight-Haulers go hog wild on C’Tans and all your other tough friends out there?  Oh, do you like to use some half-damage abilities?  Well, all I can say is eat some Plague nonsense and watch as all my lasers, snot rockets, and rotten bullets wreck your face through the sheer ire of Mortarion and his friends.

Ignoring All Modifiers is a powerful rule, and while I don’t always agree in how it is used it is still something to think about.  Especially with Hypercrypt being a powerful option for Necrons and the table being covered with tough star gods who want to steal all your candy.  I expect a lot more Death Guard players to show up, especially in team events where they can easily hunt for those pesky C’Tans or mean ole Redemptor Dreadnoughts.

Happy Gaming!
