The Aethon Heavy Sentinels are coming to Horus Heresy but should they also jump forward to Warhammer 40,000?

Yesterday we chatted about the new Aethon Heavy Sentinel Rules that were released for free. They look like a tough unit with some cool Solar Auxilia flavor. Today we want to talk about if they should also get rules for Warhammer: 40,000.

Aethon Heavy Sentinels In 40k

First and foremost, I don’t it would be that much of a problem if they did get rules. I’m pretty sure Games Workshop could also whip-up rules for them in a week if they really wanted to. Realistically, these are just Armoured Sentinels with different weapons and some rules tweaks.

But it’s really that last bit about them being “just Armoured Sentinels” that’s the issue for me. I don’t know if they are going to bring anything new or exciting to the tabletop for the Astra Militarum. And make no mistake,  if they were added, they would need to be a part of the Astra Militarum army. The only real reason I could see having them as an option is just because the model is neat.

They even look cool tiny.

It would make a lot of sense for them to get rules for 40k. It would allow 40k players to take them which, from a business perspective for GW, means more potential sales. And you could even make the case for them lore wise as it could be any number of things. Perhaps their STC was rediscovered. Or there was some forgeworld in the Imperium that was just forgotten about stockpiling them. Or maybe some lost Solar Aux fleet that got lost in the warp re-emerged. Take your pick — that’s the writer’s job to fix.

On the flip side this unit/miniature is at least something to draw players into starting a Solar Auxilia army. So maybe it should stay in The Horus Heresy-era. Let the Solar Auxilia be different from the Astra Militarum. Let them keep their volkite weapons and Heresy-era tech. Why do 40k players always want to take the cool stuff from the Horus Heresy?!

I kid. I kid. Personally, I don’t have a dog in this fight. But I do wonder if adding the Aethon Heavy Sentinels to 40k is a good idea or not. I can see pros and cons for both sides. Frankly, I think it’s just a matter of time until GW whips up a datasheet for them — even if it’s just something that relegated to Legends. Will they ever get official Matched Play approved rules? That’s the part I’m less optimistic about.

Pretty sure their rules team could convert these to a 40k datasheet rather fast…

But what do you think?

  1. Should The Aethon Heavy Sentinels get rules for 40k?
  2. If yes, should they get Legends rules only or full on official Matched Play rules?

Let us know what you think in the comments and why you want them in 40k or not.

I do like those models though…
