The new short film The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story shows that even heroes like Miles Morales have tough times.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spiderverse was initially set to hit theaters this Friday. The franchise’s third movie is delayed indefinitely. This is due to several factors, including the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers refusing to negotiate with the unions last summer. There’s also the need to make sure animators have good working conditions, which was an issue with the last movie.

Fans will be waiting a while for another Spiderverse movie, but a new Miles Morales adventure is coming tomorrow to fill that Spider-Verse-shaped hole in your heart. The story explores the side of being a superhero that everyone can relate to—dealing with self-doubt after failures and being overwhelmed by responsibilities.

The story…

In the genre-bending thriller The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, Miles Morales struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend, and student while acting as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. After a particularly challenging day living with these pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.

The Spider Within – For a Good Cause

The new short film was created with the Kevin Love Fund. The organization focuses on mental health advocacy and education for kids and teens. The Spider Within is part of their “The Hero Within” program that shows everyone, even superheroes like Miles Morales, is going through something.

It’s directed by Jarelle Dampier and written by Khaila Amazan as part of Sony’s LENS program. The director is excited to bring this new story to life and get its message out, saying…

“My favorite genre is horror. I think it’s the perfect envelope to give great messages out, especially to younger audiences, and I think it’s something that we’ve kind of shied away from for a long time.”

The Spider Within drops tomorrow, March 27th, on YouTube; make sure you get a reminder here.
