Alpha Protocol is back on PC! After a long absence, gamers can finally play Obsidian’s underrated espionage RPG.

Alpha Protocol is one of those games that people who’ve played it won’t shut up about and with good reason. It was a masterclass in what the Spy genre could be like in video game form. It was, unfortunately, also mired by bugs after its release. As a result, its ambitious swings earned a ravenous cult following but didn’t perform well enough to warrant a sequel from zaddy Sega.

And five years ago, sales of the game were halted, owing to expired music licenses. Of course, if you still had a copy for your PS3 or Xbox 360 you could totally play it, but on PC, Alpha Protocol was all but dead. Until now.

Like one of the many super espionage agents in the genre, Alpha Protocol is back from the dead, thanks to Good Old Games. And by all reports, it should be better than ever.

Alpha Protocol Back on PC

Alpha Protocol was a revolutionary game for its time. You played Michael Thorton, a secret agent who could be a mix of personalities. At the time, dialogue options were given three different tones: professional, suave, and aggressive, or as most folks called them: Jason Bourne, James Bond, or Jack Bauer. You could customize your playstyle to involve a mix of martial arts, weapons, stealth, and explosives. All of it could change the outcome of your game.

The “best ending” was notoriously difficult to earn. And that’s before game-breaking bugs settled in. Because for all that Alpha Protocol had its merits and following, it also could be randomly unplayable.

But according to Good Old Games, that should be different now, as the team has gone through and reverse-engineered some of the worst offenders. Which you can see in action, in a documentary about the preservation of this game, linked above.

And, it’s even discounted right now, though that will likely run out in April. So, if you’re curious about this sleeper hit of a game, now’s the time to dive in.

Loyalty carries a price and no one knows this more than agent Michael Thorton. A talented young agent cast out by his government, Thorton is the only one with the information needed to stop an impending international catastrophe. To do so means he must cut himself off from the very people he is sworn to protect. As players determine how to accomplish different objectives, the decisions made and actions taken in each mission will ultimately transform the type of secret agent Michael Thorton will become. Every choice the player makes as Michael Thorton will carry consequences for his future and the fate of the world.

Now to go figure out which playstyle to try THIS time.
