Goatboy’s 40K : Say Hello to New Points, and Goodbye to a LOT of Units!

It’s been a pretty crazy week of 40K with new points coming out, FAQs being answered, and a lot of units going away.

Goatboy here, I think this is probably the most balanced we have seen 40K in awhile so let’s sit back, pull up some popcorn, and go over the big things from this past week.

40K New Points!

The biggest “news” we have had this week is the release of a new batch of points.  Thankfully the two new codexes coming out this weekend got updated points which is a good thing and hopefully something will see more often in the future.  It’s always hard to plan for armies and builds while we wait for the actual points in building an army list.  The points didn’t shift a ton from what we had before, but that is a good thing when you think about it.  We did get a big answer, though in this release and something that will be coming to a lot of other armies currently waiting for their actual codex release.

Goodbye Forge World Units

Orks points had what is most likely the future for all current 40K releases.  This is the pruning of Forge World units from armies.  It appears armies will keep their current “big a$$” Forge World models and most likely all of the other smaller stuff FW will go away. We already had that with CSM, and their initial “these are only for Horus Heresy” models are going to the wayside and will most likely continue through all the other Codexes.  The Wet Hot Summer of Grot Tanks was kneecapped before it even had a chance to start –*sob sob*

The reason why I bring this up is I expect this to happen when we finally get the real T’au Empire points in a few weeks.  There are a few “Staple” units in Tau right now that you can’t even buy from the Forge World site.  This leaves me thinking that they will get “Legended”.  I always found how powerful and useful the Tetras were – to be a real problem, as new players couldn’t really get them for their army.  It does suck, as there isn’t a replacement for a fast, guiding, and move-blocking unit but it always felt like a crutch in the game.  I also think the majority I saw on the tabletop weren’t FW resin and most likely 3d printed or recast.

Will this mean some of the other armies will lose their FW stuff too?  I know the Adeptus Custodes kept most of theirs, and they needed too.  Their new release didn’t get them a unit to replace some of the tank options so it would really increase the bad time feels if they had pulled the rug on their floating tanks.  I would rather have seen new units in the codex but as long as we still have options, I’m good – if I ever build my Golden Muscle Mommies army.

The GW 40K Update Cycle

The other big chatter from this points update has to do with how we’ll see updates in the future.  Will we see Points updates one quarter, and Balance Dataslate updates in the next?  This is a big set of news and something I think will end up making for a better “cycle” of armies.  I am hoping we see more “updates” to some of the indexes with either new detachments or other new changes.  We know Codex Emperor’s Children is coming sooner or later, which should be more than a hint of what is coming next army-wise.

With the Tau codex coming out in a few weeks we’ll see their points and get the true view of “non-available” FW units as well as what points these new suits are.  I know I took a bunch of those overcharged Cyclic Ion Blasters to the face a few times, and watching no Hazardous rolls failed.  So it made me happy we’ll see a book.  I won’t lie to ya – I hope the Tetras are gone. I have found them annoying every editions I have played against them.  I hope the points for the suits are too high as I feel they are really balanced out with their changes.  Like my review said the idea of a bunch of suits doing some suit dancing interests me.

40K 10th Edition’s Bright Future

What do we have in the future, though?  I am guessing an updated set of Missions/cardpack will show up at some point per GW conversations and discussion of Seasons like we see in AOS and their other games.  I hope we see something done about some of the Fixed choices in missions, as for some armies they feel a bit too static and kind of boring.  I also have hopes that the Chaos Space Marine codex is fun as heck and the new Emperor’s Children Index is actually a valid option.

But hey – we got points early for Orks and Custodes which means players can start building new armies if they want too which is a good thing.
