Alright you late 90’s Edgelords, this one’s for you! Here’s our top picks from Marvel 2099 we need for Marvel: Crisis Protocol.

The 90’s were quite the time for comics. There were some choices made because cause of the boom (and bust). We also had the end of the millennium quickly approaching and everyone seemed to be fixated on that magical “1999.” Anyhow, Marvel decided to take a leap forward into the future of 2099 and brought us a re-imagining of some classic Marvel Characters. This idea was so “good” that it basically spawned the Ultimates Universe in a manner of speaking (which was just a way for Marvel to re-imaging characters in a more modern time (Marvel did/does a lot of re-imagining of characters)).

ANYHOW…the Marvel 2099 brought us some crazy dystopian-ish future characters that almost feel closer to cyberpunk edgerunners instead of the edgelords they were. In any case, if you were a fan of comics around this time you’ve probably got some fond memories of the insanity of these characters. So here’s our picks for the one that should make the jump in time to Marvel: Crisis Protocol!

Spider-Man 2099

Spider-Man 2099 Omnibus Vol. 2 cover

I don’t know if Miguel O’Hara needs much of an introduction these days. He was kind of a big deal in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Anyhow, he’s the 2099 version of Spider-Man and he’s got just enough to make him different than our dear old Peter Parker. It was certainly a redesign of the classic but with a darker and grimmer twist. Almost a grim-darkness, if you will. Anyhow, I’d love to see this character fall through the timestream and end up in MCP!

Punisher 2099

Punisher 2099 Vol 1 #34 Cover

You eyes do not decieve you! There was indeed a Punisher 2099! This ain’t Frank Castle, it’s Jake Gallows. And oh boy…if you thought the Punisher was edgy you don’t know Jake! I’m not going to get into all of it but just take a look at that costume. From head to toe he’s ready to administer Punishment. Honestly, one of my favorite memories of this character is that he had a device that basically worked like a jamming device for surveillance equipment. All videos/photos of him were altered so that his face was replaced with what we’d now call a Punisher Skull Emoji. I hope if he comes to MCP we get an alternate head swap that’s just a big Punisher Skull Emoji.

Doom 2099

Doom 2099, Issue #2 Cover

We couldn’t include all “good guys” from 2099, right? And since we still don’t have Dr. Doom in MCP yet, I vote we get Doom 2099! You can tell how edgy he is because of the extra spikes on his armor. And check out the double “O” in his logo. Those are supposed to look like his eyes! So hardcore!

All edgelord jokes aside, I do like this relatively simple update to Doom. Change his color pallette,  add some spikes, and make him just as imposing as his “modern” incarnation. Also, just because there can only ever be one DOOM — this is still technically Victor Von Doom. Just, ya know, with a 2099 “upgrade.”

Ghost Rider 2099

I’m pretty sure this character was dreamed up by a Marvel Exec who said, “What if the Ghost Rider was actually like Terminator and also was into hacking? The kids are into this newfangled internet fad, right?” I’m only half-joking. You can read-up on Ghost Rider 2099 and while he doesn’t quite have the Spirit of Vengeance, there’s certainly a shared appreciation for vengeance. Also, the flaming skull is still cool even if he’s more Cybernetic/Cyberpunk than mystical in nature. Besides, we all could use another Ghost Rider in MCP, right?!

X-Men 2099

And finally, we can’t NOT include a team for the last part of our list. How else can we cram even more 2099 “nostalgia” into the game than to bring in the X-Men of 2099! What’s really funny is that this team has popped up occasionally in other X-Men timeline jumping stories to help out. Does that make them the most canon characters on this list? Eh…debatable. But at least there’s a lot of them to add to MCP and that’s really all I want.
