These Commanders are custom-made for Douglas Adams fans, since they’ll feel a certain kinship with a deck filled with depressed automatons.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander.

There is a wealth of creature types in MTG, and many of them have great support in both the lore and cards. However, an often overlooked member of the family is the humble Myr. Created as extensions of Memnarch’s will on Mirrodin, these quiet automatons monitored the primary biomes of the metallic plane.

What their true purpose was, no one can say, but there always seemed to be a deep intellect behind their eyes. When these little guys go to war, it is with an army of their mind-melded brethren at their back.

Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch

Urtet is an incredible Myr Commander, able to turn a small army into a massive threat in just a few turns. Whenever you cast a Myr spell, Urtet gives you another Myr and all your Myr untap at the beginning of your combat step. While that might sound a bit redundant at first, his second ability is what makes it astounding.

For one of every color, you can tap Urtet to give all your Myr three +1/+1 counters. Since the primary use of Myr is for mana generation, you can quickly build up an army of rocks that produce the mana you need, buff themselves, and then untap to dish out the pain in the damage step. The Myr remember their true master and his last spark is enough to make them deadly.

Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer

This is a great way to put fear and respect on the name of Myr. Brudiclad gives all your tokens haste (and in a Myr deck, you’ll be using a lot of tokens), which is already pretty great. However, his secondary ability is where he truly shines, making a 2/1 Myr and then making all tokens a mirror of any token you control.

That means if you can clone one of your nastiest Myr, or even Brudiclad himself, you can make a token army of them. With Brudiclad’s clone being nonlegendary, you can start a ripple effect where EVERY Brudiclad makes more Brudiclads. Make the Green player watch as you outtoken them in just a few turns.

Morophon the Boundless

Morphon seems to have found his way into all the forgotten tribal decks, but his presence is welcome here. There aren’t many colored Myr, so his cost reduction won’t do much for this deck, but his anthem effect and access to all five colors are neat for support spells and field buffing. Myr don’t have much, so a massive 6/6 of their creature type doesn’t go unappreciated.

WHILE HE ISN’T LISTED ON EDHREC, IT WOULD BE A FLAVOR FAIL TO HAVE A MYR LIST AND NOT INCLUDE…

Memnarch

The master of the Myr and the guardian of Mirrodin (before he went crazy), Memnarch is the perfect Commander for a Myr deck if you want a flavor win. While his abilities don’t do much for the Myr themselves, he can steal your opponent’s best stuff and use it to help YOU.

What is Magic the Gathering Commander?

For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering. You use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory. EDHRec.com is an excellent source for Commander info and can give you ideas on how to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one.
