MTG: Spring into Battle with Superdrop 2024

5 Minute Read
May 13 2024

It’s High Noon over in Thunder Junction, and some of MTG’s worst outlaws have arranged a special Secret Lair concert, invite only.

Welcome in, Praetors and Planeswalkers! We’ve reached the middle of the year, which means it’s time for another exciting Secret Lair Superdrop! Spring Superdrop 2024 is jam-packed with great drops, reprinted with awesome new art. Whether you’re looking for a tongue-in-cheek Instagram mock-up, a few new wanted posters, or a special concert by Hatsune Miku, this Superdrop has something for you.

If you’ve never heard of Secret Lair, you can check out our explainer. For those of you looking for card-for-card value, this isn’t the drop for you. However, if you want to add a little flash to your deck, there are a lot of fun things to choose from.

Secret Lair X Hatsune Miku: Sakura Superstar

Starting off the Spring Superdrop is the first in a series of collaborations with Vocaloid Superstar Hatsune Miku. Miku is a Japanese digital pop star, and her Secret Lair entry is the perfect opening act. Whether you need an Azusa for your landfall deck, a Feather for your Boros Burn deck, or a Chandra’s Ignition for a Gruul stompy, you’ll find just what you need here. I can’t wait to see what the NEXT chapter in this collab reveals.

Goblins are one of the most popular creature types in Magic, and they’ve certainly earned their spot. This Secret Lair asks the question on everyone’s mind: If Goblins had an Instagram, would they get many followers? This set unleashes some of the most photogenic Gobbos into the influencer sphere, including the powerhouse Goblin Welder. But there seems to be a hater in their midst! I wonder if this “Thrun” will get them banned.

Outlaw Anthology Vol. 1: Rebellious Renegades

The first of three OTJ-themed drops, this set brings some of the nastiest criminals of the Multiverse to Thunder Junction in Old West style. You get the duplicitous Planeswalker Tezzeret, the demon Griselbrand, Grenzo the goblin rabblerouser, and, of course, the biggest bad of all, Nicol Bolas. This is definitely the set to grab if you want to build a nasty Grixis deck, as all of these gentlemen slot into it perfectly.

Outlaw Anthology Vol. 2: Sinister Scoundrels

Another bad guy roundup, this drop showcases a different set of nasty ne’er-do-wells. We have Vorinclex in his original shape, Korvold, Memnarch of Mirrodin fame, and Karona, the goddess who nearly shattered Dominaria. Rendered in the same comic style as the previous set, this is a set to grab if you want a nice display page for your rares binder.

Showcase: Outlaws of Thunder Junction

Much like the Ixalan Showcase from the Winter Superdrop, this showcase takes four renegades from across the Multiverse and gives them suitable wanted posters. You have the vampire Kalitas, the dwarven treasure fiend Magda, the unfortunate Dack Fayden, and the biker rat from Kamigawa, Greasefang. I love the art style of these pieces, and this is a great way to spruce up your favorite Commander decks.

Poker Faces

It wouldn’t be a Western-themed drop without some playing cards, and this drop has the perfect five candidates. Representing a Royal Flush of victory, these five cards are rendered in the style of a classic poker deck. They don’t have any card text, but the flipped art style is very cool to look at. If you know what your cards do, this is an amazing set to add to your collection.

sAnS mERcY

Easily one of the most divisive drops, sAnS mERcY is a Comic Sans formatting nightmare. While the cards are extremely powerful, the text is wacky, with formatting and capitalization thrown out the window. They’re fun for a laugh, but many fans were unimpressed with the odd text choice.

You can grab all these drops over at the Secret Lair shop. But hurry! The sale ends on June 2nd, and it’s likely many of the drops will disappear even sooner.

What do you think of these Commanders?
