‘Call of Cthulhu’: Revisit The King In Yellow In ‘The Sutra Of Pale Leaves: Twin Suns Rising’, A Campaign In 1980s Japan

Take a look inside the Call of Cthulhu expansion, The Sutra Of Pale Leaves: Twin Suns Rising, and find the King in Yellow in 1980s Japan.
Call of Cthulhu is the most popular tabletop RPGs in Japan. The game of eldritch horror and creeping nightmares has long surpassed D&D, so it’s little wonder that Chaosium should come out with a new setting that takes Investigators to Japan. And in a reveal trailer for an upcoming new expansion, The Sutra of Pale Leaves: Twin Suns Rising, we get a look at 1980s Japan beset by the slithering darkness that lurks beyond the stars. The King In Yellow rises once more – will you be able to survive?
The Sutra of Pale Leaves: Twin Suns Rising – A New Campaign and Setting For Call Of Cthulhu
First, things first, what a trailer. And voiced by one of the Commander Shepards, too. That’s Mark Meer providing the narration, and if you live in the UK you can also catch him GMing live shows as part of Call of Cthulhu’s new live tour that is ongoing right now. If you can check it out, you should. I’m jealous over here, stateside.
But we’re here to talk about the new setting, and the new adventures that await you within it. It’s a new take on the King in Yellow, a figure that casts a long shadow over Lovecraft’s collected mythos. Which is funny, because the King in Yellow is actually a creation of author Robert W. Chambers, who wrote about the King in Yellow in a series of short stories from the turn of the century. That’s where the idea of a “play that claims the midns of those who read it” comes from, as well as concepts like Forgotten Carcosa and the titular King in Yellow.
All that to say, I’m super excited to see what awaits within the new book.
“This Call of Cthulhu supplement takes you to the Japan of the 1980s. It is a time when the generations are at odds, yakuza gangs are thriving, and the traditional world is at war with modernity. Ancient creeds, gods, and spirits vie to keep their toe-hold in this new world of capitalist opportunity—and overworked and overwhelmed humans turn in desperation to spiritual organizations that promise release and new meaning. This is a world that needs the Prince of Pale Leaves—and he answers the call.
The King in Yellow—in his guise as the Prince of Pale Leaves—is different. He is here to help. Those who cry out to him lose their minds and souls, but it will be far worse for the rest of us. This book also includes a comprehensive guide to the Sutra of Pale Leaves itself, covering the insidious effects of the text, the cults associated with the Yellow King, and an array of new Mythos monsters for use in any Call of Cthulhu game.”
Inside you’ll find a series of three linked adventures, as well as new monsters, cults, and the like. They’ll take you across a variety of locales within 1980s Japan, from creeping depression to action manga to internecine gang warfare. It sounds great.
And you can check it out now, as the Sutra of Pale Leaves is ready for pre-order—and when you pre-order, you get a PDF right away!
See you in the 80s!
