The Grey Knights have a new Combat Patrol coming soon. Is this one going to be a good deal or a hard pass?

Games Workshop showed off the Grey Knight Combat Patrol that’s on the way. We know the contents in the box and we also know that all of the miniatures included aren’t exactly new, either. We also know the standard pricing for GW’s Combat Patrols. So let’s bust out the napkin and do some math to figure out if this is a deal worth taking.

Grey Knight Combat Patrol Pricing Breakdown

Contents:

Castellan Crowe $45

10x Strike Squad $65

5x Brotherhood Terminators $60

Venerable Dreadnought $62.50

Total Individual MSRP: $232.50

Total Savings: $62.50

That savings is based on the new Combat Patrol price point of $170. With this box set you’re basically saving on the price of the Venerable Dreadnought. Honestly, I think this one is just okay. If you’re just starting a Grey Knights army, I could see picking this one up. However, I wouldn’t purchase more than one copy of this Combat Patrol. You don’t need two Castellan Crowes in your collection. The savings for two just doesn’t make sense to me.

Now, if you can find a copy of the OLD Combat Patrol (picture above) and you wanted to play Grey Knights, I’d get it. You could combine both boxes and have a pretty decent sized Grey Knight Army ready to go. According to the current Munitorum Field Manual (aka the Points), you’ll be able to field 5-man Strike Squads of Grey Knights. So you’ll be able to use everything in both boxes.

While both boxes do overlap in units, that’s partly because the Grey Knights just don’t have a very deep roster of options. Relatively speaking of course. Anyhow if my math is correct, points-wise the new combat patrol works out to 685-695 points (depending on how you load out the Strike Squad as they can be built a few different ways). That’s actually a nice chunk of a 2k list in one box. Plus you’ve got lots of room to expand.

We’ll have to wait and see how the new rules treat the Grey Knights. For now, if you’re interested, you should check out their Index. You’ll get a rough idea of what you’re working with. The codexes have typically just added to the Indexes. There have been some differences between them to be sure. But it hasn’t been so drastic that what you build with the index won’t function in the Codex.

Final Verdict: Just one copy of the Combat Patrol if you’re starting a new Grey Knight army.
