Warhammer 40K: – Space Wolves Hot Mess – Where My Big Dawgs At?

Goatboy here to talk about the big thing missing from the new Warhammer 40K 10th Edition Codex Space Wolves: Characters

The new Space Wolf codex is coming in hot soon, and thankfully, GW gave us a review copy to dig into.  Overall, I like the book except for one thing I feel is missing.  It feels like a giant hole has been ripped from the boo,k and the Sagas have now gone quiet for some of our missing Big Dawgs.

If you haven’t seen it yet, the new Space Wolf book is out, and the big gaping hole in the army list is a lack of “Space Wolf” generic characters.  There is a ton of Enhancements in this book, and while a lot of them let you give things to Adeptus Astartes characters, there are a few options locked into the Space Wolf side of things.  Which, of course, just leaves us three generic “Heroes” to strap these enhancements onto.

Where’s the Thunderwolf Lord?

Now these three Generic Heroes are alright, but I have to ask the question – where the heck is my Wolf Lord on Thunder Wolf?  We don’t need two different Generic Thunder Wolf Characters, but how could we not at least have one?  The Wolf Lord is such an iconic unit for Space Wolves, and to not give us one that rides his giant Wolf into battle like some kind of madman is a real shame.  It feels like a big miss in an otherwise interesting codex.

The Thunderwolves themselves got a nice glow up with better damage and the same tough wolf body.  I wonder if the shift into granting them an extra damage and the ability to get up to three somehow makes up for the lack of true leadership.  Where is the brother out there telling these Thunder-Dawgs to go hard into the enemy?  We don’t need a giant Santa Sled, we just need a bro throwing his hammer around all angry like.

Now We’re MISSING a Marine LT!

On the other side of things, too, why don’t we have a foot equivalent Lieutenant to help control some of these Blood Claws?  Why don’t we have more senior Wolf Guard officers to help spread some of this character love around?  Also, why don’t the Grey Hunters carry a Plasma or Meltagun with all their bolters and chain swords?  Is it weird that a lot of the army feels very constrained in the wargear side of things as well as just options in general?

The other weird thing is that a lot of these units are locked into only hanging out with Space Wolf characters.  This also goes into the other direction, where the Space Wolf Characters can only join the Space Wolf units.  Ragnar isn’t running with Assault Intercessors or Blade Guard Veterans.  He can only trust his giant top knot with the brothers, who get how angry he gets.

Is there going to be a stealth update to allow more Space Marine units to join with the Wolves or grant Keywords to those units if they are taken in a Space Wolf Army?

What do you think?  Is this a hot mess just sitting there in the middle of the floor?  Do we go pick it up and call our Space Wolves a bad boy?  Did the cat actually do it and not the dog?
