Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse releases on May 17th. And two books will no longer be purchasable on D&D Beyond’s store.

As May 17th draws closer, so too does the individual release for Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. “Monsters of the Multiverse” is a mouthful for sure. And not just in terms of its slightly clunky title. The book aggregates and updates more than 250 monsters from both Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes and Volo’s Guide to Monsters. Your favorite monsters’ stat blocks are leaner, and in some cases a little meaner. And accompanying this, all the spellcasting monsters in those books get an overhaul. Is it the same sort of overhaul we can expect from the 2024 Core Book releases? Probably.

But either way, Mordenkainen’s newest tome of friends and foes will be out on its own soon. If you picked up the Rules Expansion Gift Set then you’ve got your hands on the book already. We did — and you can read our thoughts right here. Come May 17th, Monsters of the Multiverse gets its digital release too. And alongside that, the two books it replaces are vanishing from the D&D Beyond digital marketplace.

Volo’s Guide & Mordenkainen’s Tome

But D&D Beyond isn’t removing the books. Nor is WotC errata-ing them out of existence. You’ll still be able to play with and access Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes. You just won’t be able to buy them on D&D Beyond’s Digital Marketplace. As they explained in their FAQ about this very subject, on May 17th, you won’t be able to buy the books anymore. But if you already own them, they won’t be removed.

You’ll have the option to select which stat blocks/versions of PC race options you want to use. So you get to decide on a case by case method which you want. Provided you already have the books.

But if you were hoping to pick up either of those books, now might be your last chance. Of course, you can still find physical copies anywhere. And you have a week left to snag a digital copy from D&D Beyond. But there’s also Roll20 and The Foundry too.

Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse

Still curious about Monsters of the Multiverse? Here’s the book in a nutshell.

Sparkling with the musings of the wizard Mordenkainen, this tome features a host of creatures for use in the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. Hailing from every corner of the multiverse, these creatures represent some of the most benevolent and malevolent forces that D&D heroes might face.

The book also gathers together fantastical peoples from many different worlds. Each of these peoples represents a race option when you create your D&D character, expanding on the choices in the Player’s Handbook.

Compiling and updating monsters that originally appeared in Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, this book presents friends and foes for any D&D campaign, many of them accompanied by the comments of Mordenkainen. The wizard has faced many of these monsters and peoples on numerous wondrous adventures. Now it’s time for you to venture forth and face these creatures yourself!
