I’m all for reinventing old ideas and bringing back the familiar, but did anyone expect 90s classic “game” to make a return in Slam Throne?

Just in case your birth year starts with a 2, let me explain. Pogs were a cultural phenomenon back in the 90s. While it was theoretically a game, it was mostly just for collecting. I distinctly remember my favorites being the Power Ranger set that I had. Good times. Anyway, fast forward and upsetting number of years and Pogs style gameplay back with Slam Throne!

Slam Throne Overview

The game was just announced a couple days ago, as of writing, but fortunately, we have the full rulebook ready to go. Double fortunately, the rules are dead simple.

Both players stack their health caps in a stack in front of them. Both players go back and forth using their Hero Slammer and essentially throwing the slammer at the top of the stack, not the side. Any health caps that land flipped are counted as damage. Players to back and forth until one player is dead.

But! There is a little more to Slam Throne than just that. Each Hero Slammer has a special ability. At the start of the game both players choose if they will use their Catch ability or their Passive ability. Once chosen, it can be be changed. The passive ability is always in effect, easy peazy.

But the catch ability is a little trickier. In order to activate a catch ability, the player must throw their slammer, deal at least 1 damage, and catch the slammer before it hits the table. If they do that, they get to trigger their Catch ability.

Slam Throne is clearly not meant to be a high level, deeply strategic, multi-faceted game. But, let’s be honest, it’s fun to throw stuff at other stuff. Plus, it’ll provide some deep seeded nostalgia to a whole generation of gamers.
