40K: Warhammer Live 8th Edition Q&A

You do NOT want to miss this. Warhammer TV is bringing you a Live Q&A for 8th Edition!

Starting at 17:15 BST (check your local time conversion HERE) the Warhammer TV team is going to host a Live Q&A session. The hosts will be Pete Foley and Andy Smillie from GW (and who were also the hosts at the Adepticon event which we I was at).

Here’s what GW has to say about the event:

via Warhammer TV (Facebook)

“We’ll be bringing you a live question and answer session on the new edition of Warhammer 40,000. We’ll have Pete Foley – head of the teams behind the new edition’s rules and setting – and Andy Smillie – who runs the Warhammer Community team.

Tune in at 17:15 tomorrow, UK time, to watch live and maybe even have your own questions answered – if you’re a Warhammer 40,000 fan, or interested in the new edition, this is a live feed you won’t want to miss.”

We will post the live stream video as soon as it it goes up. Watch this space for more:

If you want your question answered then you’re going to have to hop over on Facebook and drop the question in the comments or join the broadcast! Questions I really want answered:

  • What’s the release date?
  • How will the Warp Scar impact the setting – and did the planets move around (from their position on the old maps) or am I just imagining things?
  • Are Vehicles & Monsterous Creatures going to move to AoS style profiles? How will Armor and Facing work?
  • What ARE the new profiles going to look like?
  • What’s the release schedule? Will there be a Day 1 PDF for current armies?
  • When’s the release date?
  • What lessons did you learn from the AoS Roll-out and how are you implementing those lessons for the 8th Edition Roll-out?
  • Who’s getting the first Codex?!
  • Will there be 40k “Grand Alliance” style books for Chaos, Imperium, and Xenos?
  • Will there be any new races?
  • When’s the release date?

There are a million more questions but what BIG questions would you want answered?

  • Tony Gonzalez

Its been FOREVER since GW has given Orks much love with new rules……hope you fix this

    • Dumbcow1

Black Templars are right there with you. Just the red-headed stepchildren. I know i got rolled into SM codex, but that’s quite a bandaid. Lets do a 3rd war for Armageddon campaign. Templars vs Ghazzy. =)

      • Red_Five_Standing_By

The Templars gained a lot of joining the regular marines.

        • Dumbcow1

Sure, it made them a lot closer to Ultramarines, just minus Librarians. Alas, at the cost of giving up ALL the flavor that makes Templars…Templars!

  • Thomas

Man, everything so far sounds great to me. It’s all the stuff I’ve droned on about for ages.

  • Tony Gonzalez

Been playing 40K since Rouge Trader days……Ive seen MANY editions come and go with 3rd probably being my favorite. AoS was a HUGE change from WHFB. Not just in the regiment style of play but also the over simplification of how wounding works. Is 8th ed going this way to? Were a BOLTER could wound a land raider or similar/

    • EnTyme

Nah. AoS has a ton of defensive abilities no on takes into consideration. Land Raiders would still require heavy weapons to bring down even if 40k adopted AoS’ fixed to-wound rolls, which nothing so far has indicated it will.

      • Thomas

They’ve said on the stream, any weapon can hurt any model, it’ll just be harder for a bolter to hurt a tank, for example. They hinted that tanks and monsters will have massive T and W values.

    • Steven Hyche

People who say things like this seem to have not played much aos. Ever try to kill something like a stonehorn with basic no rend arrows or melee attacks? Yeah it can be done with enough turns but its a waste of shots that could have been used on another target.

Everyone always uses the extreme as some type of baseline.

      • Djbz

I am a bit nervous about it because I have always had atrocious luck when it comes to things like that (Losing unharmed monstrous creatures to one round of bolter fire etc).
Hopefully the higher amount of wounds and likely needing 6’s (or possibly even higher- like Fantasy’s old 7+ to hit mechanic) will be enough to counteract that so It’s Missiles/Lascannons etc killing them rather than anti-infantry stuff

        • Vepr

I am curious to see how much firepower a full squad of guardsmen or Tau army can bring to bear with special rules etc. for instance. As a former nids player the sheer amount of shots some armies can bring to the table would eat up even the toughest MCs because getting them cover was so tough. We will just have to wait and see how they balanced it. Hopefully they cot rid of the ability of nearly every army to ignore cover in cheap and easy fashion.

          • Stealthbadger

Plus what if they give a leman russ or landraider a 3+ Save on 2d6….

          • euansmith

I think it is easier to give them a -3 Save, so only a -5 Rending Lazcannon could do more than tickle them 😉 Still, we shall see how GW handle this when the rules come out… mechandrites crossed.

          • Stealthbadger

If you mean 3+ that would also work. I’ve seen 90 lasguns struggle to deck a tactical squad so am not too concerned for my tanks. Look at at it this way: no more one shotting landraiders 🙂

          • euansmith

No I was thinking of a -3 Save, so you need to roll -3 or better on 1D6. Rending in AoS reduces the Save value, so a -3 Save versus -5 Rending would be a (-3–5), or 2+. Of course, GW could go with a less savage save and more wounds 😉

          • Stealthbadger

Ahhhh clever. Like a velociraptor in a maths lesson.

          • SYSTem050

Did gw forget which 2nd ed people were talking about read an old players hand book and think THAC0 thats a mechanic we could use

  • thereturnofsuppuppers

I can’t wait to find more stuff to complain about after this. Its going to be a whole new game!

  • I’m getting pretty excited about this and I didn’t think that was possible. I’ll definitely give it a try.

    • ZeeLobby

GW are the Masters of excitement. And we drum up a lot ourselves. I was stumbling over myself for AoS until I actually read that first book.

      • It’s the tone more than anything. There’s a lot of “we’ve been doing it wrong” implied. For example, he said Deathstars used a loophole in the rules. For a corporation any corporation to admit flaws in their product is rare. For GW, whose response to issues has been “you are playing it wrong,” to be saying this kind of thing is heartening. They won’t get it right overnight, but I’m definitely interested in where this leads.

        • euansmith

GW never seemed to put enough effort in to telling players how to “play it right” in the past 😉 Hopefully things will be different this time round.

        • ZeeLobby

True. My concern is how long does this last. When they make these changes and suddenly their quarterly profits don’t double, what then. I just don’t know if I still have the heart to follow a product that’s dictated by yearly reports. It’s just my pessimism. I’ll just have to wait, haha.

          • Brian Griffith

Well, they can’t just go year to year. This edition itself has been in development since six months after 7th hit according to what they said today. GW can’t turn on a dime, but they still had to come up with product until the edition was ready.

I think a lot of the newer stuff probably got developed with an 8th edition counterpart in tandem. Mechanicum, Genestealer Cults, the Legion Rules, etc. Those probably most reflect the design philosophy they wanted going into 8th and will play the most similar after the changeover.

          • ZeeLobby

Well and it’s iterative. I’m sure everything they introduced in AoS wasn’t already in the works for 40K, but as they saw things work or not work, they removed or added them. My concern is that any change in investor pushback and it changes their whole mentality. It’s just how publicly traded companies work. I really wish they had remained private.

        • Charon

I dont buy the loophole story.
I mean come on. You can argue about superfriends sharing special rules to be a loophole. Fine. But a lot of deathstars did not need to share rules, some of them did not even have to come from different sources. This is hardly a “loophole”. Thats like saying “we never even intended that players use the invisibility spell”

          • The combination of the lack of playtesting and the “forge the narrative” mindset meant that GW really didn’t seem to realize what the Invisibility spell, Superfriends, or any other thing like that did to the game. More importantly, they blamed the players when things were unbalanced. I’m not getting that tone from them now.

      • Brian Griffith

We’ve got a helluva lot more disclosure and detail this time, though.

        • ZeeLobby

Oh, this will be handled WAY better than AoS was. I have no doubt.

          • Brian Griffith

I’m certainly not hating what they talked about today. Especially since the first army list books will be the super-faction megatomes that in AoS were both huge and cheaper than codexes.

Being able to get an “Everything Chaos” book to tide me over until the codex shuffle starts up again doesn’t hurt my feelings one bit.

  • Private Skittles

“Anyone who bought a [obsolete] rulebook in the last 8 weeks can email our customer service department and get some vouchers to replace the value”.

    • Peter B

ahahaha there go all of GW’s profits of The Gathering Storm Book3!

      • Keith Wilson

i bet the gathering storm books arent considered “codex” books

    • ZeeLobby

      Yeah. Will never happen.

      • yorknecromancer

Ummm… It was literally the last thing they said in the livestream. If you’ve got a valid reciept for a codex from the last eight weeks, they’ll give you vouchers to its value.

        • Geronimo32509

          • ZeeLobby

            It won’t!

        • Stealthbadger

Ah but being cynical is being smart. Right?

          • ZeeLobby

I actually forgot the /s, lol. i watched the livestream

          • Stealthbadger

Then it’s happy days all round. Praise the new GW!

          • ZeeLobby

Haha, i’ll take any of it!

        • ZeeLobby

PSH. They’ll mail turds, just you watch!

        • Jani Jalassalo

yesterday returned the Traitor Legions book and did get refund from it, so not just voucher for that value.

      • Red_Five_Standing_By

People on facebook are already saying they have called in their purchase of Gathering storm 3.

        • ZeeLobby

Hmm, so if I bought it now… Shoot, I need to go buy it. Or does it have to be before this announcement? I’d have never bought it for money, but buying it for a voucher, sure!

          • Brian Griffith

I dunno what benefit you’d get, as the voucher is only for the cost.

Though I think they’re limiting it to codexes and corebooks.

          • ZeeLobby

well i’d get the third gathering storm book for free essentially, and i’d use the voucher to buy an 8th edition codex. I mean there has to be at least cool pictures in there or something.

          • Brian Griffith

Oddly, I found both the Warzone Fenris books and the Gathering Storm trilogy pretty light on art versus dramatically lit battlefield scenes with models.

In retrospect, I have to wonder if they weren’t keeping back a lot of their art buys for the new edition.

          • ZeeLobby

            Definitely a possibility.

          • Matt Razincka

I believe they said you have to have purchased before the announcement on Saturday 4/22.

  • Stealthbadger

So it’s been designed with massive input from the tourney crowd. This sounds good right? I mean surely if there’s a broken combo they’d find it and hopefully GW can eliminate it. Same with points.

Let’s just hope they don’t all play eldar.

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

The nice thing is that with an annual general’s Handbook, if anything does appear to be out of whack (good or bad) they can adjust the points or rules.

  • Nyyppä

All y’all dweebs who claimed I would never say this, here it is: THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!

  • Baldrick

I see no Ward-Toilet linked with this new Ed currently……this could be very promising…….

  • Ruinous Potato

    When’s the release date? 😉

  • Emperor’s Champion

I don’t understand the question relating to the armies not being on show, the website hasn’t really changed at all or am I missing something?
