Knowing your way around the card catalog isn’t going to save you in ‘The City of Archives’ – the next mind-bending Mythos Pack for Arkham Horror: The Card Game.

We’ve been covering all the latest for Arkham Horror: The Card Game – which is one of my personal favorite Living Card Games from FFG. In it, players take the roll of investigators (represented by their customizable deck that upgrades as the game progresses) who are trying to solve mysteries, survive crazy scenarios, and face the things from beyond our reality.

Today Fantasy Flight Games has announced the Fourth Mythos Pack for their Third Expansion Arc known as The Forgotten Age Cycle. Get ready to head into The City of Archives.

Following the events of Heart of the Elders, you and your expedition team find yourselves in close quarters with creatures that go beyond anything you expected to find in the rainforest. Time stretches on as you begin to wonder whether you have been trapped for days or weeks. You fade in and out of consciousness, attempting to comprehend all that is happening around you as your mind battles exhaustion and rages against what you know to be impossible—a hideous race of creatures that cannot be of this Earth, hidden from the world beyond. Their twisted bodies consist of immense corrugated cones of clammy flesh, with four thick limbs extending from the top. They are haunting to look upon, but does strange necessarily mean dangerous?

This new Mythos Pack has some new mechanics and a pretty jarring twist – your investigator can swap bodies and become one of these inhuman Yithians!

If you choose to go this route, you simply swap your investigator card out with the Body of a Yithian Investigator card. Your previous trama (both mental and physical) stay with you and you cannot change out your deck! You’re still you…just with a new look. If that wasn’t enough, to represent this new form all of your stats become twos as your investigator is trying to get a grip on their body. You lose access to your investigator’s special ability – but you get to double the number of icons of cards you commit to skill tests. It’s a trade-off but it could certainly be worth it!

Keep in mind this transformation does not remove your signature weakness – if you pull that card, you’re still liable to face it’s effects.

Wondering around this City of Archives may have some advantages. There are some new tools to help you in your journey. First off Slip Away is a powerful new Evade card. Not only does it tap into your lore stat, it also can prevent an enemy from readying during the following upkeep phase – you’ll keep it pinned for basically 2 turns! It’s also a zero XP card meaning you could start a new deck with this card…or splash it into decks who have access to Rogue cards.

Crystalline Elder Sign is another card that taps the new Seal mechanic. Using this card allows you to Seal (or remove from the bag and place on this card) the +1 token or Elder Sign token. Removing one of those helpful tokens nets you a +1 to all your stats for as long as that card remains in play. Is that worth the trade-off? I’ll let you decide.

The City of Archives is coming later from FFG – are you ready to go exploring in a new body?

The City of Archives $14.95

The City of Archives is the fourth Mythos Pack in The Forgotten Age cycle for Arkham Horror: The Card Game.

Following the events of Heart of the Elders, you and your team of investigators have journeyed deep into a series of caverns where a new world lays hidden from the outside world. Strange creatures that cannot be of this world have seemingly lived beneath the shell of the Earth for centuries. They are horrifying to look upon, but are they dangerous? Now within their domain, it may be best to go along with whatever they want, but how much can you trust them, and what might your naïveté cost you?

This Mythos Pack features a new mechanic that makes playing this scenario an out-of-body experience, as well as new player cards to customize your investigators’ decks.

I don’t think those things use the Dewey Decimal System…
