The sci-fi horror franchise returns to the big screen after an 11-year absence with Shane Black and Fred Dekker at the helm. The first trailer has all of the hallmarks: action, gore, and one-liners.

This movie has been kicked around on FOX’s schedule a few times; it was greenlit in 2014. It initially had a February release date, it has been pushed back 7 months to September. Star Keegan-Michael Key has claimed that the entire third act was re-written and there have been a decent amount of reshoots. This could be good or bad. We’ve had some great movies come out of re-shoots in recent years. Sometimes delaying and re-working is for the best.

See what you think…

The official synopsis:

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

The script is from Shane Black (Predator, The Nice Guys, Iron Man 3)  and Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps, House). Both are known for their comedy/horror chops. Cast includes Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Edward James Olmos, and Thomas Jane. I’m seeing a decent amount of practical effects here instead of cheap CG, which is always nice.

For those that aren’t convinced, Empire got their hands on a still from the production that has a bit more energy to it.

I can’t see Dekker and Black producing something that’s not entertaining. That may end up making some fans not so happy – the reaction to the trailer across the net has been pretty split. Hopefully, the next trailer or two sells the movie better.
