Goatboy here and some rules might have leaked out from the new Ork book right as the codex was announced. Here’s what the army looks like right now.

If you mix these buggy leaks this with the bits of info from GW and you get an idea they are really pushing the Speed Freaks/Evil Suns army to the forefront.  At the very least the Evil Sun don’t have the default best clan/faction/etc rule in having a flat -1 to hit (rumored to be going away or changing…).  Of course the version of Orks I always played was some kind of Evil sun set up so you know the Goatboy is extremely pleased to see my style of play pushed to the forefront.

For those wondering the rumored Evil Suns rule is +1 to movement, advance, and charge mixed with the ability to advance and fire their assault weapons without penalty.  This seems pretty dang good especially mixed with the trike of doom we have on the new “biker warboss”.  Speaking of that – expect all the converted things from the index to not be in the codex.  I expect the indexes to go away at some point (once Chapter Approved hits and maybe they will add in the missing units to the back of it with the beta Sisters codex – Assassins, Inquisitors, etc) so don’t expect your biker conversions to last.  In some ways I think it sucks as there is a lot of conversion ability having options like this – but if they feel the balance of the game doesn’t need them.  Or heck they could just release a “wargear” centric Chapter Approved with character wargear for everyone.  Its like Oprah giving every leader, Chaos Lord, and Warboss a brand new Plymouth.

Dey All Go Fasta

Enough nonsense – lets think about how the army would play with this whole Speed Mob/Trike Boss.  A unit of bikers or say some Gorkanauts would move 8 inches +1, then D6 + 1, shoot whatever assault options they have (rokkits and flamers), assault your enemy, and then profit by being all the way up the field.  This is with a giant Robot most likely filled with Nobs or Mega Armored turds ready to Krump your army into oblivion.  Heck mix in a jumping unit of Ork Boyz or Shoota Boyz and you got a screen clearing option mixed with some really rough set of damage potential.  Heck throw in some buggies to be annoying and you got this giant wave of rusty metal coming your way.

DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA

This army will be fast, brutal, and randomly have a chance to throw a ton of bullets into you.  Speaking of bullets – I bet will see a lot of Evil Suns main mixed with some Bad Moons on the side.  Reroll 1’s of the shooting phase sounds pretty good for Orks especially when mixed with a ton of Lootas or other massed shooting units.  How much do you want to bet will see some kind of amazing shoot Stratagem that either gives you better hitting or – maybe lets you shoot again like the Chaos one?  Mix this with the leaked info given on a Grot Shield strat and you got a set up for a unit of dirty boyz who survive all the attention brought to them by your enemy.  I mean – if they are shooting those guys and not the blood thirsty red Orks coming at you well – isn’t that a bit of a win?

As I sit here writing this up in my room I look over my shoulder at the giant Red Stompa I have ready to be painted.  I got it over a year ago and it just sits there surround by Magnus and 2 Lords of Change.  It looks sad and wants to the see the table top.  Do you think it might actually be good in this new version?  I bet we see some point drops and those rumored cleaned up rules for its guns.  It seems pretty baller for an Evil Suns army as well because it would move pretty dang fast as it waddled up the field like a 8 month pregnant lady.  Throw in some close combat elements inside or a ton of flamer options and watch the hilarity as everything just moves back from the giant effigy of Gork or is it Mork?  I know my buddy Nick has a really nice story about the Stompa shooting his entire Dark Eldar army at an Adepticon one year.  The old rules had it keep shooting if you didn’t roll doubles.  It just shot the entire army as it somehow found a teleporta attacked to an ammo store.

Da New Buggies!

The biggest thing that excites me with this release is that they are dumping out a lot of models I actually want.  Don’t get me  wrong – I will probably convert at least one of the super trikes.  It just screams to do a conversion – most likely with a Land Speeder to do a “fake” Sammie on his speeder option.  Heck loot a Catacomb Command barge from the Necrons and get a Cyborg driving around.  Heck I got a Cyber Ork commission starting up soon so this type of thing will be excellent for that.  This is the joy from being an Ork player/convertor.  There are so many ideas and things to loot especially with all the new vehicle rules.  Its this plethora of options that make this army so much fun to build.  Its just going to be nice to have rules to let the army actually work well with whatever play style you want.

While Orktober is looking like Orkovember it is still exciting to finally see more 40k stuff coming to the table top.  It has been awhile and the last release was not the most exciting (Space Wolves).  It is nice to see a fully realized Xenos book that doesn’t need a ton of combinations to make annoying.  Cuz man let me tell you – if Chapter Approved doesn’t do much to tweak Eldar – expect a lot of Pointy Earred Space Jerks to show up at any high level event you decide to throw down in.  All I know is I got a few months of commission to dig myself out of before I can seriously throw my own weight into the Ork pool.  I will just wait, gather my goodies, and hope they are still as good as I hope they will be.
