MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Launches Tomorrow
MechWarrior and BattleTech fans, it’s been a long time coming – but Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries is launching tomorrow!
It’s been almost two decades since we got a single-player sequel to a MechWarrior game. Sure, there was MechWarrior Online in 2013 – but that was basically an MMO-lite. It really wasn’t since MechWarrior 4: Vengeance in 2000 and it’s expansion Mercenaries in 2002 that we’ve had a stand-alone MechWarrior Game. But the the wait is finally over!
Saddle Up, MechWarriors!
It’s been a long time coming with the MechWarrior franchise. While we’ve had some pretty great installments of games since 2000, this game is promising to bring it all the way back to what old school fans miss from the franchise: Single Player!
While BattleTech (from Hairbrained Schemes) is a great game for the Tactical Turn-based version of these giant robots obliterating each other, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries puts you back in the cockpit for a FPS style simulator. And if you’re worried about the game play, the Piranha Games is the studio behind this one – they’ve been running MechWarrior Online since it’s launch so they are pretty experienced and well versed with all things MechWarrior.
Personally, I’ve spent close to 200 hours playing both MWO and BattleTech over the years so I’m pretty excited about this one. The return to a Single Player experience means I’ll be able to take my own time and play at my own pace. While I enjoy the Multiplayer throw-downs with MWO, there really doesn’t seem to be any consequences to winning or losing. Sure, the payouts are different, but with a Single Player campaign you’ve got to manage your own Merc Company at the same time. There are risks to playing too freely with your Mechs and Co.
