Watch it Made: The Eye of Smaug
Jonas Olsen is a sculptor that uses wood as his medium – most of his works focus on animals, both real and mythological. In this chill creation video, he walks us through creating the eye of Smaug using a chunk burled wood, stain, oils, and an array of carving tools. Beyond the end result, what I like about this is that he talks about his tools and process throughout – including tips for other carvers.
He’s also done some cool stuff with non-organic materials…
Check out more of Olsen’s behind the scenes videos on Youtube. You can also purchase his work, he sells his wood creations on Etsy and he has some prints of his pencil drawings available here.
